Orlando Pirates Star Patrick Maswanganyi Set for AFC Move
Orlando Pirates star Patrick “Tito” Maswanganyi is on the brink of leaving the Soweto giants, with talks at an advanced stage over a move to an unnamed Asian Football Confederation (AFC) club.
The 28-year-old playmaker, a central figure in Pirates’ recent revival, is expected to start a new chapter abroad after three standout seasons in black and white.
First Signs of a Move
The first real sign came in Polokwane. Maswanganyi was a surprise omission from the matchday squad at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, where the Buccaneers edged Sekhukhune United 1-0 in the first leg of their semifinal thanks to a strike from veteran Deon Hotto.
Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou made it clear afterwards: Maswanganyi was not injured. That revelation sharpened the transfer noise into something far more concrete.
Career at Pirates
Pirates snapped up “Tito” from SuperSport United in 2023, and he wasted no time turning himself into a fan favourite. Creative, busy, brave on the ball, he became a key pillar in the side that finally ended Mamelodi Sundowns’ long stranglehold on the league, delivering the club’s first title since 2012 last season.
After that triumph, it looked as though Pirates might hold the core of their squad together. They had already cashed in on one crown jewel: Relebohile Mofokeng, the reigning Footballer of the Year, sold to Belgian top-flight outfit Union Saint-Gilloise shortly after the FIFA World Cup. Losing another star so soon felt unlikely.
Ongoing Exits
Yet the exits have kept coming. Right-back Deano van Rooyen’s departure after two years at the club was confirmed, trimming experience from the defensive unit. Now Maswanganyi appears next in line, even though he had featured in every fixture leading up to the trip to face Sekhukhune.
International Experience
For the player himself, a move abroad would not be a step into the unknown. As a teenager, he left the renowned Stars of Africa Academy for Portugal, spending several years there and learning the demands of European football before returning home to rebuild his career.
Maswanganyi has four Bafana Bafana caps, a modest tally that hardly reflects his club influence. He missed out on the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco at the start of the year, and then the World Cup, after slipping down the national-team pecking order.
Looking Ahead
Now, with Asia calling and Pirates reshaping once again, “Tito” stands on the edge of another reinvention. The question is no longer whether he goes — it’s what Orlando Pirates will look like without him.
