Owen Wijndal Leaves Ajax as Left-Back Depth Chart Shifts
Owen Wijndal has left Ajax with immediate effect, bringing a swift and definitive end to a spell that never quite matched its promise.
The 26-year-old left-back, once signed as a cornerstone for the future, found himself without any realistic prospect of playing time. After weeks of talks, both player and club agreed to terminate his contract early, Voetbal International reports. His deal at the Johan Cruyff ArenA had been due to run until mid-2027.
Ajax, wrestling with a bloated squad and a renewed hierarchy at left-back, clear space on the wage bill. Wijndal, suddenly a free agent, now has to find the next step in his career, with no new club announced yet.
New faces, no room
The writing had been on the wall all summer.
Ajax moved decisively in the transfer market, bringing in two new left-backs: Caio Henrique and 19-year-old Spaniard Jofre Torrents. Henrique quickly edged ahead of Wijndal in the internal rankings in recent weeks. Then Torrents joined him in overtaking the Dutch international.
The shift became visible against Telstar in a 0-4 win. Torrents came off the bench to get minutes; Wijndal never left his seat. For a player who arrived as a €10 million signing from AZ in 2022, the message could hardly have been clearer.
Talks followed. Both sides searched for a solution that would avoid a long, stagnant season for the defender and an expensive reserve for the club. On Wednesday, that process ended with a clean break. Wijndal said his goodbyes to his team-mates and walked away from Amsterdam as a free player.
A spell that never fully ignited
Ajax brought the Zaandam-born defender in two years ago with high expectations. He arrived as one of the Eredivisie’s most highly rated full-backs, an attacking outlet from deep and a long-term option on the left.
The reality proved more uneven.
During the 2023/24 season, Ajax sent him on loan to Royal Antwerp FC, a clear signal that his status as an automatic starter had evaporated. Back in Amsterdam this summer, he faced not a fresh start, but a crowded lane and a club ready to move on.
In total, Wijndal made 77 official appearances for Ajax, scoring 3 goals and providing 7 assists. Respectable numbers, but not enough to cement his place as the undisputed first-choice left-back in a team that demands constant impact from its wide defenders.
Now Ajax turn fully to Henrique and Torrents on the left, while Wijndal, at 26, enters the market at an age where his next decision will shape the prime of his career.
