Pape Matar Sarr did not just make his first Juventus start on Thursday night. He announced himself.
Thrown into the XI for the Europa League clash with N.E.C. Nijmegen in Turin, the 21-year-old midfielder played all 90 minutes of a 5-0 demolition and walked off to the kind of praise every new signing craves.
Spalletti purrs over “thoroughbred” Sarr
Luciano Spalletti did not hide his satisfaction. The Juventus coach, speaking after the game, highlighted exactly what had caught his eye.
“Sarr is a thoroughbred because he has quality in his running,” he said in his post-match press conference. “He had a good game tonight, especially considering it was his first. He also responded to me a couple of times, so that's positive. Players with these qualities can sometimes lack a bit of sharpness, but he did many things well. He was always involved with the team and close to the ball. I'm happy with his performance.”
That last line summed it up. Spalletti had thrown a new signing straight into a European night and watched him look as if he had been there for months.
Sarr had already tasted his first minutes in black and white the previous weekend, coming off the bench in Serie A against Sassuolo at Mapei Stadium in Reggio nell’Emilia. That was a cameo. This was responsibility.

The eye test said Sarr played with composure and energy. The data backed it up.
According to Sofascore, he completed 98% of his passes, and he did not misplace a single one in the opposition half, finishing with 100% accuracy there. He recorded 70 touches, constantly involved in Juventus’ build-up, and contested eight ground duels, winning three.

The Italian sports dailies reflected that balance. Gazzetta dello Sport gave him a 6.5 out of 10, while Tuttosport and Corriere dello Sport both handed him a 6. Solid, competent, a base to build on.
From deadline day to centre stage
All of this has come quickly. Sarr only joined Juventus from Tottenham on deadline day, arriving on an initial loan with an option to buy.
The deal is clear: €2.5 million for the loan until the end of the season, with Juventus holding an option to make the move permanent for €27.5 million.
For a player who has just started his first match for the club, those figures already feel like a storyline to watch. If he keeps producing nights like the one against NEC, that option will not stay theoretical for long.
