Portsmouth Sign Young Defender Benjamin Arthur on Loan

Portsmouth have moved to strengthen their back line with the season-long loan capture of young Brentford defender Benjamin Arthur.

The 20-year-old centre-back arrives at Fratton Park after a spell in the Scottish Premiership with Celtic, where he featured six times last season. Those minutes north of the border added to a growing résumé that already includes three senior appearances for Brentford and caps for England up to Under-20 level.

Coach's Excitement

Blues head coach John Mousinho made no secret of his excitement at getting the deal done, describing Arthur as a modern centre-half who fits the way Portsmouth want to play.

"We're thrilled to bring Benjamin here for the season to boost our defensive ranks," Mousinho said. "He possesses all the attributes you expect of a centre-back and is also more than comfortable with the ball at his feet."

That last point matters. Mousinho wants his side to build from the back in their third campaign in the Championship, and Arthur’s profile ticks that box. A defender with top-flight exposure, still early in his career but already trusted in high-level environments.

"Despite his relatively young age, he already has experience of top-flight football," Mousinho added, "and we feel he can be a real asset as we look to progress in our third season in the Championship."

Portsmouth now hand a key defensive role to a player eager for regular minutes. How quickly Arthur adapts to the grind of the Championship may say plenty about where the Blues finish this season.
