Rafa Marquez to Lead Mexico After 2026 World Cup
Mexico's journey in the recent World Cup ended with a loss to England, marking the conclusion of Javier Aguirre's third term as head coach. Aguirre, who has decided to step down, will be succeeded by his assistant, Rafa Marquez, a celebrated figure in Mexican soccer.
Marquez, who earned 147 caps for El Tri and achieved success in European leagues, has been preparing for this role since mid-2024. He paused his coaching studies at Barcelona—where he won two UEFA Champions League titles and four La Liga championships as a player—to join the national team’s coaching staff.
Duilio Davino, Mexico's sporting director and former defender, confirmed that Marquez has already signed his contract along with most of his coaching team ahead of the World Cup.
From Player to Coach
After ending his playing career at his hometown club Atlas, Marquez briefly served as Guadalajara's sporting president before pursuing coaching credentials in Spain. He managed Barcelona Athletic, the club’s B squad, starting in 2022. Although he extended his contract after the first year, he left when the opportunity to lead the Mexican national team arose.
During his career, Marquez excelled as a center back and defensive midfielder, gaining experience under coaches like Pep Guardiola, Didier Deschamps, and Ricardo La Volpe. Fans anticipate a shift toward a more dynamic and forward-thinking style under his leadership, contrasting with the cautious approach of Aguirre, who is expected to retire at 67.
Young Talent Offers Hope
Despite the early exit, Mexico's future looks promising. Gilberto Mora, a 17-year-old midfielder, made history as the youngest player since Pelé to start a knockout World Cup match. He is one of five players aged 23 or younger on the current squad.
Other rising stars include Obed Vargas, preparing for a full season with Atlético Madrid; Mateo Chavez, who scored against Czechia; and Armando "Hormiga" Gonzalez, the top scorer in Liga MX attracting interest from European clubs.
Marquez aims to nurture these talents and collaborate with Liga MX owners to promote player development within the domestic league.
Next Steps for Marquez and El Tri
The 47-year-old will soon guide Mexico through the Concacaf Nations League. The competition's draw is set for July 23, with opening matches scheduled for September 21.
