Rafael Leao Hints at Manchester United Move
Rafael Leao has never hidden who shaped his football dreams. Now he has hinted where those dreams might take him next.
The AC Milan forward, long admired across Europe, has named Manchester United as his favourite Premier League club – and did so at a time when he is being heavily linked with a summer move to Old Trafford.
Speaking on the Cernucci podcast, the Portugal international was asked whether he follows English football and which team he prefers. His answer will not have gone unnoticed in Manchester.
“Yeah of course,” he said. “I like (Manchester) United because my idol is Cristiano Ronaldo, so back then, I used to watch them. I like Arsenal also.”
It was a simple admission, but a pointed one. United want a winger. Leao may soon be available. The dots are easy to join.
Cut-price chance for Europe’s elite
Leao is one of the most coveted wide forwards in Europe, yet his situation at Milan has opened a rare window. After the Italian club missed out on European football, the 26-year-old is understood to be attainable for a fee in the region of £43m – a figure that would represent a cut-price opportunity for a player of his pedigree.
He has scored 60 goals in 291 appearances for Milan, mixing raw pace with power and a knack for breaking games open in an instant. That profile has already put him on the radar of several heavyweights.
Chelsea and Barcelona have both been linked with the forward, weighing up whether this is the moment to move for a player who has been tracked for several seasons. Clubs in Saudi Arabia and Turkiye, including Galatasaray and Fenerbahce, have also registered interest, sensing a chance to lure a marquee name.
Reports, though, indicate Leao has little appetite for a move to either destination. At 26, with his prime years ahead, the pull of top-level European competition and a major league remains strong.
United’s rebuild gathers pace
That is where United come in. Back in the Champions League and under new leadership, the club is actively searching for a winger to add thrust and variety to their attack.
The recruitment drive has already started. United are on the verge of signing Atalanta midfielder Ederson for around £38m, a deal that would address one key area in midfield. The plan is to go further, to add depth and quality across the squad after securing a third-placed finish and a return to Europe’s elite.
Michael Carrick, who guided United back into the Champions League places, understands the scale of the task and the scrutiny that comes with every window.
“I think the beauty of the next transfer window, for everybody, it's always the biggest thing in the world, and the most important transfer window of all time, for every club, I think,” he said. “That's just the nature of how it's been created, to be honest, and I think, again, as a football club, you want to keep moving forward. We certainly do.”
He did not shy away from the reality of the squad’s current state.
“I think it's acknowledged we're at this stage, and the dynamics and the balance of the direction we're at, where we've ended up getting to, and finishing in the league, there's obviously work to do.
“It's quite obvious, with certain players leaving, there's a bit of work to do, but this one is not any more important than the last one, it's what's ahead of us as a football club to try and make the most of it.”
That “work to do” includes finding a wide forward who can change games in Europe as well as domestically. Someone who can carry the ball, beat defenders, and live with the weight of the shirt.
Leao, a boy who grew up watching Ronaldo light up Old Trafford, now finds himself at the centre of a market where United are hunting exactly his profile. The hint has been dropped. The price is set. The question now is whether United turn admiration into action.
