Raheem Sterling Charged with Dangerous Driving and Nitrous Oxide Possession

Raheem Sterling has been charged with dangerous driving and possession of nitrous oxide after a motorway crash involving a Lamborghini, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed.

The incident took place on 28 May on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley interchange. Police say it was a single-vehicle collision. No other cars were involved and no injuries were reported.

Sterling, 31, faces three allegations: dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation and failing to provide a specimen. He is due to appear at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on 15 September.

Career Overview

The forward, currently without a club, has spent more than a decade in the spotlight at the top end of the game. Born in Kingston, Jamaica and raised in England, he emerged from the QPR academy before earning a move to Liverpool, where he made his senior breakthrough.

His performances at Anfield propelled him to Manchester City in 2015. There, he became a central figure in one of the most dominant sides English football has seen, winning four Premier League titles, five League Cups and the FA Cup in 2019.

On the international stage, Sterling scored 20 goals in 82 appearances for England. He played a key role in Gareth Southgate’s team that reached the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and the final of Euro 2020, often carrying the attacking threat in major tournament knockout games.

Sterling joined Chelsea in 2022 but gradually slipped down the pecking order and spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Arsenal. After leaving Stamford Bridge, he signed a short-term deal with Feyenoord until the end of the season, stepping into a new chapter in the Netherlands.

That contract has now ended. As he waits for his next move in football, he will first have to answer to the charges laid against him in a Hampshire courtroom.
