Rasmus Ankersen Steps Down as Southampton Director

Rasmus Ankersen has stepped down from his role as a director at Southampton, drawing a line under his formal day-to-day influence at St Mary’s while remaining tied to the club as a co-owner.

The 42-year-old, a central figure in Sport Republic’s football operation, will now take a step back from boardroom duties at the Championship side. His departure from the director’s seat marks a notable shift in the hierarchy, even if his financial stake – and interest – in the club remains.

Ankersen’s presence around Southampton has already faded in recent seasons. His responsibilities as president of Turkish club Goztepe have increasingly pulled him away, limiting his hands-on involvement on the south coast. Even so, he has continued to play a part in the club’s recruitment work, an area where his reputation was forged.

Before arriving at Southampton under the Sport Republic umbrella, Ankersen built his name at Brentford. Between 2015 and 2021 he helped shape the Bees’ rise, a period that culminated in promotion to the Premier League and cemented Brentford as one of English football’s smartest operators.

Sport Republic, fronted by Serbian businessman Dragan Solak, holds the majority stake in Southampton and has built a growing multi-club portfolio. Alongside the Saints, the group owns a majority share in French side Valenciennes and controls Goztepe, who are currently bottom of the Turkish Super Lig.

Ankersen’s exit from the Southampton boardroom does not end his influence in that network. But it does leave a question hanging over how Sport Republic will now structure and steer its football strategy at a club still fighting to reclaim its Premier League place.
