Raul Asencio’s Real Madrid career is already into comeback mode before the season has truly begun.
The 23-year-old defender, once tipped as a long-term piece of the club’s future, is instead fighting to repair his reputation after a series of serious off-field incidents that have shaken his standing inside the Bernabeu.
Mourinho walks into a storm
When Real Madrid stunned European football in June by handing Jose Mourinho a three-year deal and bringing him back to the club, the expectation was familiar: trophies, tension, drama. He did not have to wait long for the last part.
The Vinicius Junior transfer saga dominated the early weeks of Mourinho’s return, with the Brazilian heavily linked to Arsenal before finally signing a new contract this summer. That alone would have been enough noise for any new coach.
But the biggest problem waiting for Mourinho was not a potential departure. It was a defender already in his squad.
Asencio had become the centre of a major drink‑driving controversy that has now spilled into the courts and into Real Madrid’s internal corridors of power.
Drink-driving case and heavy sanction
On August 16, at around 6:30am, police stopped Asencio at a breathalyser checkpoint in southern Gran Canaria while he was driving a Porsche Macan GTS. The checks showed he was over the legal alcohol limit.
He failed both the initial and secondary breath tests.
According to Spanish outlet Atlantico Hoy, the results registered 0.90 and 0.88 milligrams of alcohol per litre of exhaled air. Spain’s legal limit is 0.25 mg/l. Asencio was more than three times over.
The case moved quickly. The Real Madrid player was summoned to a fast‑track trial and handed a €14,400 (£12,480) fine, calculated as €120 per day over four months. He also received an eight‑month driving ban.
For most players, that alone would be a major scandal. For Asencio, it is only part of a wider legal picture.
Another court date, another controversy
The drink‑driving trial took place just one day before Asencio was due back in court for a separate legal proceeding.
That case relates to him allegedly sharing a sexually explicit video said to have been recorded in 2023 by three of his former Real Madrid youth academy teammates. Asencio is accused of showing explicit images of two female complainants to another person on his mobile phone.
He has privately apologised to both women and paid them compensation. The two complainants are said to have forgiven him, but the stain on his reputation remains and the legal process has not simply vanished because of those gestures.
For a 23-year-old defender at one of the world’s most scrutinised clubs, the margin for error has almost disappeared.
Real Madrid weigh their response
Inside the club, patience has limits. According to Defensa Central, Asencio understands the gravity of his mistakes in recent years and is determined to put that period behind him, focusing fully on his football and on convincing Mourinho he can still be trusted.
That resolve will be tested immediately.
Real Madrid have opened disciplinary proceedings against him over the drink‑driving conviction. Before he can be fully reintegrated into the squad, the club will decide on an internal punishment.
The range is clear: a financial penalty or another form of disciplinary sanction, depending on how seriously the hierarchy judge the offence and the wider pattern of behaviour.
The pressure on Asencio is not just external. Reports suggest that Real Madrid even considered selling him during the summer window, only for an injury to block any realistic chance of entertaining offers. His future was already on the line before the latest controversy exploded.
Mourinho’s challenge – and Asencio’s promise
Against that backdrop, Asencio has moved to address the issue directly with the man now in charge of his career.
He has reportedly held a personal meeting with Mourinho, during which he pledged to concentrate fully on his profession, improve his football and work to leave his recent past behind him for good.
For Mourinho, who thrives in high‑pressure environments but demands discipline and absolute commitment, Asencio represents both a risk and an opportunity. A talented defender on a second – perhaps final – chance at the biggest club in the world.
Real Madrid will decide his punishment. Mourinho will decide his role. Asencio must now decide whether this is the moment he truly grows up.
