Real Madrid Opens Disciplinary Case After Valverde–Tchouameni Clash
Real Madrid head into El Clásico under a cloud after confirming they will open disciplinary proceedings against midfielders Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni following a heated clash at Valdebebas that left Valverde needing hospital treatment.
In a brief but pointed statement, the club announced: “Following the incidents that occurred this morning during the first team's training session, (the club) has decided to open disciplinary proceedings against our players Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni.”
The words were measured. The context is anything but.
Hospital trip on the eve of El Clásico
According to Spanish reports, the Uruguay international was taken from the training ground to a nearby hospital facility, accompanied by Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa. Valverde required stitches for a facial wound after what the club described as a head injury.
Madrid stressed that the 27-year-old is in “good condition” but will need up to two weeks’ rest. The timing is brutal: Valverde will miss Sunday’s Clásico against Barcelona in La Liga, a match in which the Catalans can seal the Spanish title.
For a team already under pressure, losing one of their most intense and versatile midfielders on the eve of their biggest domestic fixture only sharpens the edge.
“At no point did my team-mate hit me”
With the story exploding across Spanish media, Valverde moved quickly to calm the storm and protect Tchouameni.
“The strain of the competition and frustration caused the situation to escalate,” he wrote on social media, making it clear he regretted the scale of the coverage.
He then spelled out his version of events.
“I accidentally hit a table during the argument, causing a small cut on my forehead that required a routine visit to the hospital,” he said. “At no point did my team-mate hit me, and I didn't hit him either.”
Spanish newspaper Marca, which first broke the story, reported that the cut was caused unintentionally and not by a direct punch from the France midfielder. The club and the players’ agents declined to comment when contacted by AFP.
Row spills over two days
The flashpoint did not come out of nowhere. Reports in Spain say Valverde and Tchouameni argued during Wednesday’s training session, and the tension carried over into Thursday.
During the session, Valverde is said to have refused to shake Tchouameni’s hand and later fouled him, with tempers flaring again. The real confrontation, though, came afterwards in the dressing room, where the incident that led to Valverde’s injury took place.
The club’s decision to formally open disciplinary proceedings underlines how seriously the episode is being treated behind the scenes, even as Valverde publicly plays down the altercation.
A club on edge
All of this unfolds against a volatile backdrop. Real Madrid are staring at a second consecutive season without a major trophy. They trail Barcelona by 11 points at the top of La Liga, and Hansi Flick’s side can clinch back-to-back titles this weekend if they avoid defeat.
The pressure has been building for weeks. Now it has spilled into the open, quite literally, with blood drawn in the dressing room and one of the team’s leaders ruled out of the defining league fixture of the season.
Discipline, unity, response — those words will dominate the coming days at Valdebebas. The question is whether this flash of internal conflict jolts Madrid into life, or simply exposes how far they have slipped behind their greatest rivals.
