Real Madrid Secures Unexpected Signing of Young Striker Carlos Espí

On the very day Real Madrid agreed to transfer Gonzalo García to Fulham, the club surprised fans by signing 21-year-old forward Carlos Espí from Levante.

Espí attracted interest from several European clubs, including Brighton & Hove Albion and Hull City, but Los Blancos swooped in quickly. They activated his $28.8 million (€25 million) release clause, securing his move to the Bernabéu.

AS revealed that Real Madrid acted swiftly, finalizing deals with both Levante and Espí’s representatives last minute. The striker halted all other talks to prioritize joining the 15-time European champions, now under José Mourinho.

Espí’s Performance and Contract Details

Signing a five-year contract, Espí arrives after an impressive breakthrough season at Levante. Though he had limited playing time early in the 2025–26 campaign, he finished strong with 13 goals in 27 matches, 11 of those coming in La Liga. His contributions helped Levante avoid relegation.

Why Real Madrid Made This Move

The arrival of Espí might raise eyebrows, especially since the club was letting Gonzalo go. Buying a new striker when a natural No. 9 was already on the roster appears puzzling but was actually smart business.

Gonzalo was a key target for Fulham's manager Álvaro Arbeloa, who was willing to spend heavily. Reports say Fulham paid $46.1 million (€40 million) plus $11.5 million (€10 million) for Castilla prospect César Palacios.

Real Madrid profited from these sales and replaced Gonzalo by spending only $28.8 million (€25 million) on Espí, turning a tidy profit.

Beyond finances, Espí fits a role similar to Joselu: a reliable backup striker who can impact games off the bench and start in cup competitions. This should help Mourinho better manage squad rotation, a challenge Fulham’s Arbeloa struggled with.

The Challenge Ahead for Espí at Real Madrid

Joining Real Madrid is a huge opportunity but also a tough climb for Espí. He faces stiff competition, sitting behind stars like Mbappé and Endrick in the lineup. Brahim Díaz, who often partners Vinícius Júnior when Mbappé rests, could also limit his minutes.

While Espí may shine in the Copa del Rey, Real Madrid has a track record of early exits, such as last season’s loss to second-division Albacete in the round of 16.
