Richarlison's Outrage at Tottenham Omission: A Stand-Off Unfolds
Richarlison has gone public with his anger at being left out of Tottenham’s squad for Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup tie against Liverpool, turning an already uneasy situation into an open stand-off.
The Brazil forward posted a screenshot of a social media graphic highlighting his omission and added a single word: “Why?” followed by a tearful, sad-faced emoji. No explanation. No softening of the blow. Just a pointed question aimed squarely at the decision-makers at Spurs.
It lands at a delicate moment for both player and club. Richarlison’s future in north London was already under scrutiny after a move back to Brazil collapsed late in the window. Tottenham and Vasco da Gama were understood to have reached an agreement over a fee for the 29-year-old, but the deal died before the Brazilian transfer deadline on Friday when personal terms could not be finalised.
So he stayed. But not, it seems, on happy terms.
De Zerbi: ‘I finished my job’
Speaking on Monday before the Liverpool tie, Roberto de Zerbi cut a firm, almost resigned figure when asked about Richarlison’s situation.
“At the start of this season, I spoke to him many times to convince him to stay and he didn't want to,” the Tottenham head coach said. “I can't go every day to pray for him to stay.”
De Zerbi outlined his version of events: Spurs had put an extension on the table, made their pitch, and then stepped back.
“What I have done at the beginning of this season has been to speak with him and to propose an extension of the contract. If he said, 'no thank you,' I finished my job.”
The Italian then hinted at deeper issues, ones he refused to drag into the open.
“I know what happened in the last 45 days. It's not right if I explained. It's not my behaviour. The relationship, the problem is between the player and the club.”
That line matters. De Zerbi is drawing a boundary. This is not, in his eyes, just a selection call for a domestic cup tie. This is a fault line between Richarlison and Tottenham as an institution.
A striker in limbo
The omission against Liverpool is no longer just about rotation or tactics. Richarlison has turned it into a statement, and he has done it in the most modern way possible: publicly, instantly, and emotionally.
For a player whose proposed exit has already fallen through once, the message feels loaded. He wanted out. The move didn’t happen. The coach says his work on the matter is done. The player, left out of a high-profile cup squad, is now asking “Why?” in front of millions.
Tottenham must now decide how to answer that question – not on social media, but in selection, contracts, and the next transfer window.
