Rodri Completes £65m Move to Barcelona as Manchester City Era Ends

Barcelona have landed one of the game's elite midfielders, confirming the signing of Rodri from Manchester City in a deal worth around £65m.

The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner has agreed a four-year contract at the Nou Camp, pulling him back into Spanish football for the first time since he left Atletico Madrid for City in 2019. At 30, he arrives as a fully formed leader, not a prospect.

A serial winner leaves Manchester

Rodri walks away from Manchester with a legacy carved in medals and big‑game performances. Over seven seasons he made 298 appearances and collected 12 major trophies: four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, three EFL Cups and, crowning it all, the Champions League in 2023.

Injuries disrupted his final two campaigns in England, slowing his relentless rhythm at the base of midfield. The doubts didn’t last long. This summer’s World Cup restored his status emphatically as he drove Spain to a second title and left the tournament as its standout performer, officially named player of the tournament.

He departs City with the kind of goodbye message that underlines how deep his roots had grown.

"I am leaving the club with a huge sense of pride about what we have achieved and gratitude too for so many amazing memories,” Rodri told supporters in his farewell. "What we have done together in these years is something both very special and unforgettable.

"City didn't just make me grow as a player. They made me grow as a human. I saw my brother graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University. I could see my girlfriend working for the NHS. Manchester shaped my whole life."

Contract stand-off opens the door

The move comes with the clock ticking on his City deal. Rodri had entered the final 12 months of the contract he signed in 2022. City wanted an extension. Talks stalled. No agreement.

That impasse alerted Europe’s giants. Real Madrid initially looked best placed to pounce, and the story gained extra spice given Rodri’s past at Atletico. Speaking to Spanish radio in March about the possibility of wearing white, he didn’t shy away from the idea.

"There are more players who have taken that path. Not directly, but over time. You can't turn down the best clubs in the world," he said then.

The path never opened. Real Madrid eventually stepped away, and Barcelona moved with intent.

Sources told BBC Sport that Barcelona had secured Rodri’s approval to start formal negotiations with City. Their first bid, around £38.5m, was knocked back. City held firm. The Catalans returned with a far higher offer, and the two clubs finally found common ground at a fee well beyond that initial proposal.

A dream flight to Barcelona

On Monday, the transfer moved from theory to reality. Rodri flew into Barcelona, greeted by cameras and questions. His message at the airport was simple and revealing.

He called it a "dream" to play for the Catalan side.

Now the World Cup’s best player, the reigning Ballon d'Or winner and one of the most complete midfielders of his generation steps into the Nou Camp with a new responsibility: to anchor Barcelona’s next great team, just as he once did in Manchester.
