Rodri Seeks Manchester City Training Exemption Amid Barcelona Transfer Talks

Rodri has reportedly asked Manchester City for permission to miss training sessions while negotiations with Barcelona advance. The midfielder is eager to complete his return to La Liga after the Catalan club had a second offer declined by the English side.

Training Break Requested During Transfer Negotiations

The situation around Rodri's future has taken an unexpected twist. Despite his holiday ending this Thursday, he is seeking special permission to skip Friday’s training at Manchester City's Etihad Stadium, according to SPORT. This approach is reminiscent of what happened with Ferran Torres, who was excused from training ahead of his €50 million move to PSG.

The Spanish international is fully committed to joining Barcelona but aims to keep things professional. He recognizes that missing training without approval might seem rebellious, so he insists on staying away only with the club's consent.

Barcelona's Second Offer Rejected

Despite Rodri’s clear intentions, Manchester City remain firm in negotiations. The club rejected an improved proposal from Barcelona worth about €60 million. Even though Rodri is in the final year of his contract, City refuse to drop their asking price.

New manager Enzo Maresca has publicly stated he expects Rodri to return to training. After a preseason match in Seoul, Maresca told reporters, "Yes, at the moment he will be in Manchester. There is no update. On August 14 he will be back."

Hansi Flick's Role and Real Madrid's Respect

Rodri’s decision to join Barcelona has been influenced by conversations with head coach Hansi Flick, who convinced him that he would play a key role in the team's midfield plans.

"Out of respect for Madrid, as they have been class, Rodri informed them that his decision is to join Barca," said the player's agent in an interview. This open communication has kept good relations between all parties but clearly shows where the player’s preference lies.

Final Steps Before the Transfer

The transfer still depends on both clubs reaching an agreement. Manchester City are already searching for replacements, with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez mentioned as a possible target. However, the high price of the Argentine makes the sale of Rodri more complicated.

Manchester City have a tradition of not forcing players to stay against their will but also do not sell top performers below market value. Meanwhile, Barcelona face pressure to finalize the signing soon, especially with doubts over Frenkie de Jong’s fitness and the season starting fast. Strengthening the midfield remains a top priority for Deco and the club’s leadership.
