Roma Weigh Free-Agent Options for Left Flank

Atalanta are looming on the calendar, but at Trigoria the noise of the training ground shares space with another soundtrack: the low hum of the transfer market.

The summer window closed without delivering the left-sided reinforcement Gian Piero Gasperini had asked for. That gap still nags at Roma, who have turned to the pool of free agents in search of a solution that fits both the squad and the coach’s demands.

The stance from the club is cautious. No panic signing, no name for the sake of it. They will move only if a genuine opportunity, technically and economically, lines up with Gasperini’s ideas.

One name has re-emerged from the past. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Wilfried Zaha is among the profiles under consideration. The Ivorian forward came close to joining Roma in 2023 and is now unattached after his most recent spell, making him available on a free transfer. His ability to operate wide and attack one-on-one would add a different edge to the left side.

Zaha is not the only option on the list. Krépin Diatta is also being evaluated. The Senegalese wide player is without a club following his last season at Monaco and offers versatility across the flank, a trait that could appeal in a system that demands intensity and coverage on the wings.

Then there is a more classic left-sided specialist: Raphael Guerreiro. The 32-year-old Portuguese, who spent last season at Bayern Munich, brings experience, tactical intelligence and a cultured left foot. He would represent a more traditional solution for the left flank, capable of slotting in both as full-back and further forward.

Roma will face Atalanta with what they have. But behind the scenes, the search continues. The question now is simple: will one of these free agents become the missing piece on Gasperini’s left side, or will the club choose to ride out the season with the current squad and trust what is already in the dressing room?
