Romelu Lukaku Joins Fenerbahce After Napoli Exit
Romelu Lukaku’s turbulent Napoli chapter is over. His next stop: Istanbul.
The Belgian striker has left the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona for Fenerbahce in a deal worth a reported €6 million plus performance-related add-ons, a modest fee that underlines just how decisively Napoli have turned the page on one of European football’s biggest names.
Napoli move on, Hojlund steps in
This wasn’t a sale made in panic. Napoli had already locked in their future up front earlier in the summer, completing the permanent signing of Rasmus Hojlund from Manchester United for €44 million (£38m). The message from the Partenopei was clear: build around youth, not around Lukaku.
His price tag tells its own story. For all his reputation, Napoli were ready to clear his salary off the books and hand the keys of their attack to a younger, long-term option. Recent months had chipped away at Lukaku’s standing in Naples: recurring fitness problems, and then that unapproved training stint back in Belgium last spring which drew warnings of disciplinary action from sporting director Giovanni Manna. From that moment, his exit felt less a question of if, and more of when.
Turkey provided the answer.
Fenerbahce’s statement of intent
Fenerbahce are in the middle of an aggressive rebuild, and Lukaku now sits at the heart of it. The Turkish giants are pushing hard to reclaim domestic dominance, and they are doing it with names that resonate across Europe.
Lukaku joins a squad already significantly upgraded this summer. Nathan Ake has arrived from Manchester City to anchor the defence. Mason Greenwood has come in from Marseille. Vedat Muriqi returns to Turkey on the back of a 23-goal La Liga season with Real Mallorca. Drop Lukaku into that mix and Fenerbahce suddenly look armed for a serious tilt at the title.
For the 31-year-old, the move offers something he has badly needed: a clean slate.
A fresh start after a bruising year
Last season with Napoli never really got going for Lukaku at club level. Lingering injury issues restricted him to just seven appearances in all competitions. For a forward used to being central, it was a stop-start, frustrating campaign.
Yet his international form reminded everyone he is far from finished. With Belgium at this summer’s World Cup, he featured in all six matches and scored three goals as the Red Devils reached the quarter-finals. On the biggest stage, with a run of games behind him, his sharpness returned.
That contrast — muted at club level, decisive for his country — made his next move crucial. Fenerbahce are betting that the international Lukaku is the one they will see in Istanbul.
Life after Conte
This transfer also closes another chapter: the latest, and perhaps final, act of Lukaku’s partnership with Antonio Conte.
Conte, the coach who has repeatedly drawn the best out of Lukaku at Chelsea, Inter, and Napoli, departed the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona this summer. Their reunion in Naples had delivered instant success, with Napoli winning the 2024-25 Serie A title and Lukaku contributing 14 league goals. Then, as quickly as they had re-established their old rhythm, both moved on.
Their relationship has been one of the defining threads of Lukaku’s career. At Inter, Conte unleashed him. Lukaku hit 34 goals in his first season, then 30 in his second, driving the Nerazzurri to a Europa League final and the 2020-21 Serie A title. That form earned him a £97.5 million return to Chelsea, a move that was supposed to cement his status at the very top of the game.
It never quite did.
A career of sharp turns
Lukaku’s journey now takes in another major football city. Turkey joins a list that already includes London, Manchester, Milan, Rome, and Naples.
His second spell at Chelsea lasted just one season before the loans began. First came the return to Inter, where he helped the club reach the 2022-23 Champions League final. Then Roma, another short-term stop, another twist. Those loans eventually led to his permanent move to Napoli in 2024, a transfer that promised stability but delivered only one full season before the next upheaval.
Now comes Fenerbahce, a club with expectations as heavy as their support is passionate. For Lukaku, it is another chance to prove he can still be the dominant, penalty-box force who once bullied Serie A defences and dragged teams deep into Europe.
He has rebuilt his reputation before. The question now is whether Istanbul becomes the place where he does it one last time.
