Ronald Araujo's Impact on Liverpool and Affection for Barcelona

Ronald Araujo walked off the Anfield pitch with Liverpool’s win secured and Atletico Madrid beaten, but his mind was already drifting back to Catalonia.

On loan from Barcelona this season, the Uruguayan centre-back has thrown himself into life under Andoni Iraola. Against Atletico on Wednesday, he was immense. Liverpool edged it 2-1, and Araujo stood right at the heart of it all.

After the game, speaking to "Movistar Liga de Campeones", the questions inevitably turned to his parent club. The answer came quickly, without a pause.

“Definitely, Barcelona are among the leading contenders to win the Champions League,” he said. “They are performing brilliantly.”

No diplomacy. No fence-sitting. Araujo sees Hansi Flick’s side as serious candidates to lift the trophy.

He admitted he still follows every development at Barcelona, tracking results and stories from afar, and made no attempt to hide his affection for the dressing room he left behind.

“I follow them. I am very happy for my team-mates,” he explained. “They have a great side. I always support them, and I am very grateful for what they are achieving now.”

Those words landed on the back of a performance that underlined why both clubs value him so highly.

Araujo was pivotal against Atletico. With Liverpool chasing the game, he produced a moment of real quality inside the box: a deft backheel, the kind of touch that opens a defence in an instant. It released Dominik Szoboszlai, whose cross led to the equaliser past Jan Oblak and swung the momentum.

From there, Liverpool finished the job. Araujo, calm and commanding, helped see it out.

For now, his body is in Liverpool red and his influence is growing under Iraola. His heart, though, still beats strongly for Barcelona and a Champions League run he believes could end with the trophy back at Montjuïc.
