Ronald Araujo Shines on Loan at Liverpool
Ronald Araujo is wearing Liverpool red this season, but his future is still painted in Barcelona’s colours.
The Uruguayan defender has settled quickly at Anfield, impressing in the early weeks of his loan spell. He has even done it while being asked to adapt. Barcelona sporting director Deco made it clear this week that, whatever shirt Araujo is wearing, the club still see him as theirs.
"I watched the Liverpool match yesterday," Deco told Sport. "I love him. I'm fond of him and want him to succeed. Personally, I love him. At times, he hasn't been able to play at his usual level.
"His time at Barca was spectacular. Sometimes, ideas don't align. He is under contract with us; it's still early days."
Those last words matter. It’s still early days.
Barcelona know exactly how high Araujo’s ceiling is. They also know his level dropped over the last couple of seasons, turning what once felt like a long-term pillar of their defence into a more complicated case.
Liverpool clearly believe they can restore – and maybe even raise – his best form. If they are right, both clubs stand to gain. The Reds would secure a top-tier defender for €50m. Barcelona would bank a major fee for a player already on their books.
So the story becomes one of shared interest. Every towering header, every recovery tackle, every calm touch under pressure in a Liverpool shirt is being logged in Catalonia as well.
It is shaping up as one of the defining subplots of Liverpool’s season: can Araujo convince the club to commit €50m, and force Barcelona to decide whether they are happy to let him go?
