Salah Steadies Trabzonspor After Europa League Exit
Mohamed Salah has moved quickly to steady the ship at Trabzonspor after a brutal Europa League exit and a dramatic resignation saga involving his manager.
The 34-year-old forward, who left Liverpool in the summer to start a new chapter in Turkey, watched his new club crash out of Europe on Thursday night with a 4-0 defeat to Ferencvaros. He lasted 64 minutes before being substituted, unable to halt a collapse that sent Trabzonspor tumbling into the Conference League.
The result detonated a storm.
Head coach Fatih Tekke walked into his post-match press conference and stunned everyone by announcing he was resigning.
"I think I have the right to punish myself in this way," he said, a stark admission after the heavy loss.
The club hierarchy moved just as swiftly. They refused to let him go.
"Fatih Tekke has decided to resign due to the emotional intensity caused by the defeat following the Ferencvaros match," read a club statement. "As the Trabzonspor Board of Directors, Fatih Tekke's resignation decision has not been accepted. Fatih Tekke continues in his role and will be at the helm of our team in the Amedspor match we will play in the league."
So Tekke stays. The fallout, though, demanded a response from the club’s marquee signing.
Salah’s rallying cry
Salah chose his moment on Friday, taking to X with a message that was part confession, part challenge.
"Nothing in my career ever came easy," he wrote. "Bad nights and disappointments are part of football, and I have learned to turn them into motivation and into trophies.
"Trabzonspor is my club, and I am part of this project, body and soul. Last night will not change that. I know expectations are high, and I truly believe we can and will deliver. 'I came here to win' is not just a slogan to me."
It was a clear attempt to draw a line under a chaotic 24 hours and to remind supporters why he came to the Black Sea club in the first place.
Salah arrived to huge fanfare after agreeing to terminate his Liverpool contract at the end of last season. Following the World Cup, Trabzonspor won the race for his signature, handing him a two-year deal and the status of centrepiece in their rebuild.
Back then, his message was simple and bullish.
"The last couple of days, it's an experience I have never had in my life," he said upon signing. "I'm here to win. I want to win something with this club because you guys have showed me so much love, and I really, really appreciate that."
The love is now being tested by reality: a humbling European defeat, a coach on the brink, and a team still searching for its true level.
Tekke will lead Trabzonspor into their next league fixture against Amedspor. Salah has nailed his colours to the mast. The question now is whether this bruising night in Europe becomes the start of a crisis, or the moment this new project finally hardens into something that can win.
