Mohamed Salah turned his back on the money of Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Fatih Terim believes that single decision has just shaken Turkish football to its core.
On the eve of a fiery showdown at Papara Park between Trabzonspor and their old rivals Galatasaray, the legendary coach lit up the debate by calling Salah’s arrival in Trabzon “one of the most important transfers in the history of the Turkish league.”

“We are talking about a player who has been at the highest level for years with Liverpool, and has won everything. The Europa League, the Champions League, and Club World Cups. He is a player who is indispensable,” Terim told Turkish outlet 61saat.

“Any club in the world would wish to sign him,” he said. “Clubs from the Emirates and Saudi Arabia are ready to pay enormous sums for him, not to mention the giants of the Spanish, Italian and English leagues. But in the end he chose Trabzonspor, and this in itself is a great achievement.”
That choice drops Salah straight into one of the league’s great rivalries this weekend. Trabzonspor, sitting ninth with 7 points, are still searching for stability and a statement performance in front of their own fans. Galatasaray arrive in contrast, top of the table on 13 points, almost flawless and already eyeing a gap at the summit.

Convincing a player of his standing to pull on the claret-and-blue shirt was close to impossible, Terim argued, given the offers on the table and the comfort he could have chosen elsewhere. That is why, in his eyes, the deal belongs in the history books.

“President Ertuğrul Doğan and his administration deserve every appreciation and congratulation. Bringing in a player of this world-class value is not an easy matter at all, as he is able to go anywhere he wants. What happened is a momentous thing and deserves praise.”
