Sam Edozie Requests Transfer from Southampton Amidst Frustration

Sam Edozie has submitted a transfer request to Southampton, revealing he wants out before Tuesday night’s deadline after what he describes as a series of blocked moves and prohibitive demands from the club.

The 23-year-old winger went public with his frustration in a statement on Instagram, saying he has received “multiple offers” from clubs across Europe but has been unable to take any of them.

Last summer, he says, a move was on the table. It did not happen.

“The club did not allow me to leave,” Edozie wrote. “The same happened again in January. This summer, there have once again been multiple offers from clubs across Europe.”

This time, he has taken matters into his own hands, formally asking to leave.

Edozie questions Southampton stance

Edozie claims Southampton’s financial demands have played a major part in scuppering potential transfers.

He says the club have “requested as much as 50% of any future transfer fee, which has made those opportunities extremely difficult to pursue”.

Southampton have been approached for comment.

Edozie joined Saints from Manchester City in September 2022 and has since struggled to fully nail down a starting place. He has made 29 starts and 57 substitute appearances in all competitions for the club.

The winger, a former England Under-20 international, is currently on loan at Belgian side Anderlecht for the 2024-25 season, another sign of a career that has stalled rather than accelerated on the south coast.

Playing time at the heart of the dispute

Underneath the contract details and negotiations, Edozie says the core issue is simple: minutes.

He wrote that he was not getting “the minutes I need” at Southampton and stressed the urgency of the situation for a young player trying to build a career.

“A football career is short,” he said, “and I believe it is important I now have the opportunity to go somewhere I can play regularly, continue to develop and make the most of my career as a player.”

The clock is now ticking towards Tuesday’s deadline. Edozie has made his position clear. The next move belongs to Southampton.
