Santiago Bueno's Loan to Club America: A New Chapter

Santiago Bueno’s Wolves stint is on pause – and it might never restart.

The Uruguay centre-back has left Wolverhampton Wanderers for a loan spell at Mexican giants Club America until the end of the season, with the deal including an option to buy.

From Girona to Mexico via Molineux

Bueno arrived at Molineux from Girona in August 2023 on a five-year contract, seen then as a long-term piece of Wolves’ defensive core. The 27-year-old quickly became a regular, racking up 70 Premier League appearances across three seasons.

He even had his moment in the spotlight last September, scoring his first goal for the club in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham. By the end of last term he had played 29 league games, though the campaign ended in bitter fashion as Wolves’ eight-year stay in the Premier League came to an end with relegation to the Championship.

This season, he never got started. Bueno did not feature at all in the early weeks, squeezed out when Wolves finalised their 25-man squad.

“Our most difficult move”

Technical director Matt Jackson admitted the decision cut deep.

“This was our most difficult move of the whole window due to the circumstances,” he told the club’s website. “We were aware that there were open markets which may suit Santi after our deadline, and when we had too many players for the 25-man squad, it was unfortunately him who missed out.”

With European windows shut, the opportunity came from across the Atlantic. Club America, sitting top of the Liga MX table, moved to take him on loan, giving Bueno a route to regular football and Wolves some breathing space in a crowded squad.

For the defender, it is a sharp change of scenery: from a relegated English side to a powerhouse chasing titles in Mexico. For Wolves, it could quietly become a permanent goodbye if Club America choose to trigger the option.

If Bueno thrives in Mexico City, this loan may end up looking less like a temporary escape and more like the start of his next career chapter.
