Saudi Roshn League Adjusts Calendar for Arabian Gulf Cup
The Saudi Roshn League is bracing for a shake-up to its calendar, with the national team’s Arabian Gulf Cup campaign set to take priority over domestic action.
Saudi Arabia will host the 27th edition of the Arabian Gulf Cup, “Gulf 27”, in Jeddah from 23 September to 6 October, and the tournament is already reshaping the league landscape.
According to Saudi daily “Al-Riyadiah”, the Roshn League association is preparing a series of fixture changes after a direct request from national team coach Georgios Donis. The Greek technical director has asked for the national team’s training camp to be extended by an extra seven days before the start of the tournament, a demand that pushes the league into a tight corner.
That extra week changes everything.
The planned adjustments will hit several rounds, with the eighth round under the brightest spotlight. It is currently scheduled for 17 September, less than a week before “Gulf 27” kicks off. Officials now expect that entire round to be postponed.
At the heart of that decision lies one of the league’s marquee games: a high-voltage clásico between Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad at Kingdom Arena. What was set to be one of the early defining nights of the Roshn League season now looks likely to be pushed back to clear the way for Donis’s preparations.
The coach’s stance is clear. He wants the longest and most focused possible build-up to the Gulf tournament as he chases a prize that has eluded Saudi Arabia for 23 years. The national team last lifted the Arabian Gulf Cup in 2003, and the wait has grown heavier with every edition since.
Donis took charge of Saudi Arabia ahead of the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, but his first major campaign ended in disappointment. The Green Falcons exited at the group stage, finishing bottom of Group H with just two points. That early exit has only sharpened the urgency around “Gulf 27”.
Now, with Jeddah hosting and the calendar bending around his plans, Donis has exactly what he asked for: time. What he does with it will define far more than just a fixture list.
