Savinho Joins Tottenham in £75 Million Deal
Tottenham have smashed through the £300 million barrier in this transfer window, landing Brazilian winger Savinho from Manchester City in a deal worth a reported initial £75 million.
The fee underlines the scale of Roberto De Zerbi’s overhaul in north London. It also piles pressure on a 22-year-old who never quite cracked it at the Etihad.
From fringe player to flagship signing
Savinho arrives at Spurs after two seasons at City in which he struggled to become a regular. Across 84 appearances, he scored just seven goals, unable to reproduce the electric form that first turned heads during a blistering loan spell at Girona, another club within the City Football Group.
City signed him from Troyes, also under the same ownership umbrella, for £30 million in 2024. Now they stand to more than double their money, with the deal reportedly including up to an extra £10 million in add-ons.
For Tottenham, the context is stark. This is a club that only just escaped relegation last season, avoiding a first drop into the second tier in 49 years. De Zerbi’s arrival steadied the ship and kept them up. His rebuild has been bold. It has not yet been convincing.
The new era began with a thud: a 3-0 defeat to Brentford on the opening weekend of the Premier League season. The mood demanded a jolt. Savinho is being asked to provide it.
“I knew I had to come”
Savinho cut an enthusiastic figure as he spoke for the first time as a Spurs player.
"It's taken a while but I'm very happy to be here," he said in a club statement. "It's a wonderful opportunity at a brilliant club with one of the best managers in the world.
"As soon as I spoke to the head coach I knew I had to come. He told me he wants to help me reach the highest level and I believe we can do that together, as a team."
The message is clear: De Zerbi is central to the pitch. Tottenham are selling a project, not just a contract.
De Zerbi’s wide gamble
De Zerbi has already reshaped the squad aggressively this summer. Savinho joins a list of expensive recruits that includes Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali and Jan Paul van Hecke. On top of that, Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Martin Dubravka have arrived on free transfers.
The Italian wants his team to play on the front foot, and Savinho has been brought in to light up the flanks.
"Savio is a player who brings energy, imagination and quality in wide positions. He has the courage to attack defenders and the ability to change a game with his creativity," De Zerbi said.
"We're very pleased to have him with us, and I'm looking forward to working with him, helping him continue to grow and seeing him bring his personality to the team."
Tottenham are banking on that personality, that willingness to take risks, to transform an attack that too often looked blunt and predictable last season.
Business still brewing with City
The Savinho deal might not be the last piece of business between the clubs this month. Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush is also expected to leave Manchester for north London before the window closes next week, underlining the unusual pipeline that has opened up between the two sides.
City, for their part, move on from a player who never quite forced his way into Pep Guardiola’s core plans as the club fell short of both Premier League and Champions League glory in the manager’s final two seasons.
Tottenham, meanwhile, have taken a swing. A big, expensive, high-stakes swing on a winger who has shown flashes of brilliance in Spain but still has everything to prove in England.
If Savinho catches fire, this becomes the signing that defines De Zerbi’s revolution. If he doesn’t, Spurs will be left asking how a £75 million gamble became another chapter in a turbulent rebuild.
