Senesi's World Cup Opportunity After Balerdi's Injury
Argentina’s World Cup preparations have been jolted by injury – and transformed into a career-defining opportunity for Marcos Senesi.
Lionel Scaloni was forced to rip up part of his tournament blueprint when Leonardo Balerdi suffered a severe muscle tear in his right leg during training, a blow that instantly ruled the defender out of the squad. Medical tests confirmed a muscle injury in the soleus of his right leg, and the national team made it official across social media and in front of the cameras: Balerdi would not make the plane.
The setback cut deep inside the camp. Balerdi had fought his way into Scaloni’s plans, only to see his World Cup dream vanish before a ball had been kicked.
Scaloni refused to rush the response. He delayed his final decision until after Argentina’s pre-tournament friendly against Iceland, using the match as a live laboratory to test shapes, partnerships and contingency plans.
“Today’s test left me satisfied and cleared up many doubts regarding what the team might be lacking... Maybe I’ll take one or two more days to announce Balerdi’s replacement,” he said, underlining just how carefully this call would be made.
The pressure finally told on the manager’s shortlist. Senesi, on standby and waiting in the shadows, got the nod. The 29-year-old was summoned to fill the void and is now on his way to join the camp in Kansas City, drafted into a defensive unit stacked with talent and expectation.
For Senesi, the timing could hardly be more dramatic. He has only three international caps. He once turned down a call-up from Italy. He has just agreed a free transfer to Tottenham, effective July 1. All of that in the space of a whirlwind 24 hours – and now this.
The former Bournemouth defender will link up with his future club team-mate Cristian Romero at the heart of the Albiceleste back line, reuniting with a group that first introduced him to the senior national stage against Estonia in 2022. That debut felt like a tentative step into the picture; this call-up feels like a plunge into the spotlight.
Argentina lose Balerdi’s energy and promise. They gain a battle-tested centre-back desperate to prove he belongs at this level.
Now it’s up to Senesi to show that this late twist in Scaloni’s plans can become something more than just a contingency – and to turn an emergency call into a permanent place in Argentina’s future.
