Shrewsbury Town Signs Leicester's Michael Golding on Loan

Shrewsbury Town have moved to plug their midfield gap by landing Leicester City youngster Michael Golding on loan for the rest of the season.

The 20-year-old arrives with a sizeable pedigree. Raised in Chelsea’s academy, Golding came through the ranks at Stamford Bridge and broke into the first-team picture last season, making his senior debut as a substitute in an FA Cup tie in January 2024.

That cameo helped push his stock higher. By the summer, Leicester moved, paying around £4m and tying him down to what the club described as a “long-term contract”. He had to be patient in the Midlands, though, only making his Foxes debut at the end of the 2024-25 campaign as City slid out of the Premier League.

Now comes the reset.

Golding becomes Shrewsbury’s ninth signing of the current window and steps straight into a squad that badly needed help in the middle of the park. Jack Price’s hamstring injury has ruled the experienced midfielder out for several weeks, leaving head coach Gavin Cowan short of options and leadership in that area.

Cowan made no attempt to hide his satisfaction with the deal when speaking to BBC Radio Shropshire, stressing both the club’s admiration for the player and Leicester’s role in getting it done.

“We’re really excited and appreciative of Leicester, how they have accommodated the move,” he said. “He’s been on our radar for a while. He’s a young guy who wants to reignite his career and will be a really good addition.”

A young player looking to relaunch his trajectory. A club searching for energy and legs in midfield. The fit is obvious; the test now is whether Golding can turn promise into consistent League One performances.

Shrewsbury, though, are not stopping there.

BBC Radio Shropshire report that Town are also close to securing a loan move for Burnley striker Kian McMahon-Brown. The forward, named Burnley’s academy player of the year last season, signed a two-year contract extension in the summer, underlining how highly he is rated at Turf Moor, where former Shrewsbury chief executive Matt Williams now works as chief operating officer.

If that deal is completed, Cowan will have added fresh bite up front to go with Golding’s energy in midfield. For a club trying to reshape its squad on the fly, these are the kind of calculated gambles that can turn a season.
