St Johnstone Sign Joel Cotterill from Swansea City

St Johnstone have moved to strengthen their midfield with the signing of Joel Cotterill from Swansea City on a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee.

The 21-year-old has agreed a contract running until the summer of 2027, a clear sign the Perth club see him as a long-term piece in their rebuild rather than a short-term gamble.

Cotterill arrives with a solid grounding. Raised in Swansea City’s academy, he broke into the senior set-up in 2022 before being sent out to learn the harder edges of the game on loan at Stockport County, Swindon Town and Bristol Rovers. Each spell added a layer: different leagues, different pressures, different expectations.

The real audition for this move, though, came last season.

Cotterill spent the second half of the campaign at Dundee, gaining his first sustained taste of the Scottish Premiership. He made 11 league appearances and scored once, enough to convince St Johnstone he could handle the intensity and rhythm of the division.

Speaking to the club’s media, the midfielder revealed how quickly the move gathered pace.

“I had a call with the gaffer on Monday and he told me everything about the club,” he said. That conversation was followed by a closer look at his prospective new team. “I watched the game against Dundee on Wednesday night – and I saw how the team wants to play.”

That style matters to him. Cotterill grew up in a Swansea system built on possession and passing, and he sees a natural fit.

“Growing up at Swansea, it was always a team with the ball. I feel my biggest strength is being in possession and making things happen. I also like to drive forward and like to think I can be powerful with the ball.”

His career to date has already taken him through a series of tests away from his parent club. Those loans, he believes, have hardened him for what comes next.

“I’ve had different challenges out on loan. I think I’ve adapted previously and I’ve already got a taste for playing in the Scottish Premiership,” he said.

He knows what awaits: tight turnarounds, physical contests, little room for error.

“It can be demanding and the games come thick and fast, but I’ll make sure I’m ready for it and up for the challenge.”

St Johnstone now have a young, ball-playing midfielder tied down until 2027. The question is simple: can Cotterill turn that promise into Premiership influence in Perth?
