Sunderland Nears £30m Deal for Malick Fofana as European Ambitions Rise

Sunderland are on the verge of smashing their transfer record to land Lyon winger Malick Fofana in a deal worth just under £30m, a signing that underlines how sharply the club’s ambitions have risen ahead of a long-awaited European return.

The 21-year-old Belgium forward is travelling to England for a medical and is expected to sign a five-year contract, committing his peak years to a club preparing for its first European campaign in 51 years after qualifying for the Europa League.

The agreement with Lyon is for an initial £25.6m, with a further £4.3m locked into performance-related add-ons.

It is a fee that places Fofana among the most expensive signings in Sunderland’s history and signals a clear intent to build a squad capable of handling both domestic and European demands.

Fofana, who came through at KAA Gent before earning his move to Ligue 1 in 2024, has been on the radar of some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Arsenal pushed hard to sign him, but the Premier League champions failed to reach an agreement with Lyon over the fee, opening the door for Sunderland to move decisively.

The winger is understood to be energised by the prospect of leading Sunderland into Europe, swapping Lyon for a project that offers both responsibility and a central role in a rapidly evolving side.

And he will not be the only new arrival walking into a transformed dressing room.

Kevin Danso is set to join him at the Stadium of Light, with the Austria defender due to arrive from Tottenham on an initial loan that includes an option to buy. His signing adds top-level experience and steel to a back line that will be tested by the Thursday-Sunday grind of Europa League football.

Sunderland have already been busy. Defenders Thomas Meunier and Dayann Methalie, along with midfielder Jules Ahoka, have all come through the door this summer, bolstering a squad that finished an impressive seventh in their first season back in the top flight.

The pattern is clear: this is not a club content just to make up the numbers on its European return. With Fofana poised to sign and more high-level experience arriving alongside him, Sunderland are building with purpose.
