Sunderland Nears £30m Deal for Malick Fofana

Sunderland are on the brink of a statement signing, having agreed a deal worth just under £30m for Lyon winger Malick Fofana.

The 21-year-old Belgium forward is travelling to England for a medical and is expected to sign a five-year contract, a long-term bet on a player the club see as central to their resurgence.

The agreement with Lyon is for an initial £25.6m fee, with a further £4.3m potentially due in add-ons. It is a level of investment that underlines how seriously Sunderland are taking their first European campaign in 51 years, with Europa League football looming.

Fofana, who came through at KAA Gent before earning his move to Lyon in 2024, is understood to be enthusiastic about the project at the Stadium of Light and the chance to play regular European football.

Arsenal had tried to bring him to the Premier League earlier in the window, but the champions failed to reach a fee with Lyon. Sunderland stepped in and pushed a deal over the line, turning a long-running chase involving one of England’s elite into a coup for a club still rebuilding its top-flight status.

The recruitment drive does not stop with Fofana. He is set to join Kevin Danso, with the Austria defender due to arrive from Tottenham on an initial loan that includes an option to buy. That move adds experience and physical presence at the back for a squad that finished a highly credible seventh in their first season back in the top division.

Sunderland have already moved decisively this summer, bringing in defenders Thomas Meunier and Dayann Methalie, along with midfielder Jules Ahoka. Each signing adds another layer to a squad being reshaped for the twin demands of domestic competition and the Europa League.

A long exile from European nights is about to end. With Fofana ready to walk through the door and more reinforcements lined up, Sunderland are building a team designed not just to return to the big stage, but to stay there.
