Swansea City Secures Ghanaian Winger Joseph Opoku from Zulte Waregem

Swansea City has finalized the transfer of 20-year-old Ghanaian winger Joseph Opoku from Belgian club Zulte Waregem. Opoku, who joined the Belgian team in 2024, played a key role in their promotion to the Belgian Pro League.

The young player signed a four-year contract with Swansea, with an option for the club to extend the deal by an extra year. The Championship side has been working hard this summer to bolster their squad, and Opoku is their fifth new signing after Elijah Just, Stephen Welsh, Moussa Yeo, and Leo Walta.

Coach Matos Praises Opoku's Readiness

Head coach Vitor Matos commented on the signing: "He is a young player who has gained plenty of senior football experience in Belgium. We believe he will handle the physical demands, pace, and frequency of games in the Championship well. He is fast and sharp." Opoku has already joined the team on their pre-season tour in Austria and completed his first training session.

Strong Performances and International Experience

Last season marked Opoku’s breakthrough, with 10 goals and six assists for Zulte Waregem. His performances earned him a call-up to the senior Ghana national team for friendlies in May, although he narrowly missed out on the final World Cup squad after being included in the preliminary list.

Swansea's sporting director Ben Stevens expressed excitement about the addition: "We are really pleased to have Joseph here and eager to watch his attacking skills develop under Vitor's management. His two seasons at the top level in Belgium and involvement with Ghana's national teams showcase his talent."
