Swansea City's Strong Start: Matos Confident in Team's Ability

Vitor Matos insists Swansea City’s blistering start to the Championship season is no illusion – and that his side can go toe-to-toe with anyone in the division.

Swansea surged back up to second place on Saturday, level on points with leaders West Ham and separated only by goal difference, after a confident 3-1 win over a struggling Burnley side.

This was exactly the reaction Matos wanted after the midweek setback at Southampton. No hangover, no nerves. Just a clear, sharp response.

Adam Idah set the tone, Moussa Yeo added to the damage and Zan Vipotnik joined the party as Swansea brushed aside Vincent Kompany’s men to underline their early-season credentials.

When the dust settled, Matos claimed he did not even know where Swansea sit in the table. What he does know, and what he was keen to stress, is what this new-look squad are starting to show.

"I think we have a team who can compete against every team in the league," the Swansea head coach said, backing his players’ level rather than the league ladder.

"That's what we want. When we can compete against everyone, we know that on that day, at that particular time, we can have a proper performance and beat any opponent.

"If that happens all the time, we don't know, but we will work our socks off for that."

The message is clear. Matos is not getting carried away by league positions in September – but he is convinced Swansea now have the tools, the attitude and the belief to stay in this fight for the long haul.
