Updated List of Teams Eliminated from FIFA World Cup 2026

The 2026 World Cup has expanded the number of competing nations to 48, increasing the chances for teams to advance beyond the group phase compared to previous tournaments. This change adds an extra knockout round, allowing more teams to continue their journey past the initial stage.

Despite this, some teams have already seen their campaigns end early, including a few surprises. Below is the latest list of countries eliminated from the tournament as of late June.

Current Eliminated Teams

Haiti, Turkey, Tunisia, and Panama were among the first to exit, facing tough losses that left no chance to progress. A notable factor in these early exits involves the updated tie-break rules FIFA set for this tournament.

New Tie-Breaker Rules Impact Group Outcomes

FIFA's new criteria prioritize head-to-head results between teams tied on points, rather than overall goal difference alone. For example, Haiti managed three points but could not surpass Brazil or Morocco in their group due to losing direct matches against those teams. In case of ties, the team with the better head-to-head record ranks higher.

Third-Place Teams Can Still Advance

This World Cup format allows eight best third-place finishers to move into the Round of 32. Their ranking depends on points earned, goal difference, goals scored, conduct, and FIFA ranking.

From 32 to 48 Teams

Since 1998, the World Cup featured 32 teams. The 2026 edition increases the field to 48, adding four groups and an additional knockout round. The champion will play eight matches in total.
