Thapelo Maseko Transfer to FC Copenhagen: A New Chapter
Mamelodi Sundowns have agreed terms with FC Copenhagen for the transfer of Thapelo Maseko, clearing the last major hurdle in a move that closes one chapter of his career and flings open another.
The 22-year-old is set to fly to Denmark for his medical by the weekend. If all goes to plan, the deal will then be rubber-stamped and Maseko will officially become Copenhagen’s latest attacking addition.
It comes after a turbulent spell at Chloorkop.
On the international stage, Maseko’s stock has never been higher. He lit up the 2026 FIFA World Cup with Bafana Bafana, scoring the winning goal against South Korea as South Africa broke new ground by reaching the knockout phase for the first time. That kind of moment usually cements a player’s status at his club.
Instead, the opposite happened.
Despite his World Cup heroics, Maseko was left out of Sundowns’ pre-season tour to Austria last month, a snub that underlined how far he had slipped down the pecking order. The winger had already made his feelings known. He wanted out. Coach Miguel Cardoso did not hide it either, confirming publicly that the player had expressed a desire to leave.
Career Beginnings
It is a sharp turn from where the story began. Maseko arrived at Sundowns from SuperSport United in July 2023, fresh from a breakout season with Matsatsantsa and carrying the tag of one of the PSL’s most exciting young attackers. The move was supposed to be the natural next step.
Game time, though, became harder and harder to find. As his minutes dried up, so did his influence. By the second half of last season, he had slipped so far from favour that he was sent on loan to AEL Limassol in Cyprus.
That could easily have been a dead end. Instead, it became his lifeline.
In Limassol, Maseko rediscovered his rhythm and confidence, playing his way back into the Bafana Bafana setup and reminding everyone why he had been so highly rated in the first place. But the stint came with its own problems. The public broadcaster later reported that payment issues had marred the final months of his time at the Cypriot club, leaving the player reluctant to entertain a permanent return there.
Copenhagen Move
Copenhagen’s move changes the picture completely. The Danish giants have opted to buy him outright, handing Maseko a clean slate in Europe at a club that regularly tests itself on the continental stage.
There is history here too.
By heading to Copenhagen, Maseko steps onto a path once walked by South African great Sibusiso Zuma, who became a cult hero in Denmark with 188 appearances and 53 goals for the club after joining in 2000.
Now the question is simple: can Maseko turn his World Cup spark and his revived form into something lasting in Europe, and write his own chapter in Copenhagen’s story?
