Thilo Kehrer’s Exciting Transfer to Ajax: Making It Work
Thilo Kehrer has experienced transfer windows before, but nothing quite like this one. Deadline Day, a late call, a whirlwind of talks – and suddenly the German defender was an Ajax player.
“That was a first for me. Very exciting, it was different. I’m happy to be here,” he told ESPN on Friday, still sounding like someone who had barely had time to catch his breath.
The move gathered pace in a matter of hours. Kehrer only learned of Ajax’s interest the day before the deal was done.
“Everything happened very quickly: talks with Jordi (Cruyff), with the coach. After that, the clubs wrapped it up. The next day I was on my way.”
From AS Monaco to Amsterdam in a flash, but not into the unknown. Almost as soon as the transfer went through, a message pinged onto his phone from a familiar name: Marc-André ter Stegen, currently on loan at Ajax from FC Barcelona.
“I didn’t need to ask much. I already knew Ajax very well. I played for Schalke, not far from here. Everything was already very clear.”
The speed of the deal did not mean Kehrer jumped blindly. He weighed up the switch, and Ajax’s ambition tipped the balance.
“The most important thing for me is to be competitive and to play for titles, to have the ambition to win trophies and matches. That is possible here. The foundation is there, now we have to make it work.”
What he found on arrival only reinforced that feeling. The defender talks about Amsterdam and Ajax not as a stopover, but as a stage.
“The scale, the stadium, the atmosphere and the pure football. The club have their own DNA.”
Kehrer has signed on until mid-2027, a sizeable commitment on paper, yet he refuses to look too far beyond the immediate challenge.
“I don’t know yet. We’ll see how the season goes, but I’m certainly open to it. There are still many matches until next year. We’ll see.”
Settling in has been helped by more than just the stadium lights and the club’s history. The dressing room already holds a few familiar faces from Monaco days.
“Already knowing Caio Henrique and Simon Adringa from my time at Monaco makes it easier when you have familiar faces. They help you integrate. You already have a connection. It was nice to see them again.”
There is also a thread running back to Germany. Kehrer has crossed paths with ter Stegen and Julian Brandt before, in the Bundesliga and with the national team.
“I know Marc ter Stegen and Julian Brandt from when I played against them in the Bundesliga and from the German national team.”
Ajax wanted a defender ready to compete immediately, someone comfortable with pressure and expectation. Kehrer wanted a club chasing trophies, with a clear identity and a big stage.
The deal is done. The foundation, as he put it, is there. Now comes the part that will decide how long this story runs in Amsterdam.
