Todd Boehly and Mark Walter in Talks to Sell Chelsea Stakes as Clearlake Capital Aims for Full Control

Todd Boehly and Mark Walter are reportedly negotiating the sale of their shares in Chelsea Football Club to majority owner Clearlake Capital. This potential deal would value the Premier League club at over £5 billion, marking a major shift since the post-Roman Abramovich takeover in 2022.

Background of Ownership

The BlueCo consortium, which includes Boehly, Walter, and Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss, completed their takeover of Chelsea in a £2.5 billion deal just over four years ago. Currently, Clearlake holds a 61.5% majority, while Boehly, Walter, and Wyss share the remaining 38.5%. The proposed sale could see Clearlake gain nearly full control of the club.

Financial Outlay Without Major Trophies

Since May 2022, Chelsea has spent close to £1.5 billion on player transfers. Despite this heavy investment, no Premier League or Champions League titles have been secured, with the team enduring unstable results and frequent managerial changes.

Internal Disagreements and Stadium Issues

Reports suggest talks about a buyout have been ongoing intermittently for two years amid tensions within ownership. Although insiders deny a serious rift between Clearlake co-founder Behdad Eghbali and Boehly, disagreements over plans for a new stadium appear central to the discord. Fans have also expressed frustration over ticket prices and the multi-club ownership model promoted by BlueCo.

Xabi Alonso and the Sporting Direction

Amid these boardroom uncertainties, Xabi Alonso has taken charge of the first team. The summer transfer window saw Chelsea spend over £300 million on new players while recouping £143 million through sales. Alonso's arrival signals a shift, emphasizing experience over youth alone. To that end, the club signed Premier League veterans Jordan Henderson (36) and Danny Welbeck (35), aiming to balance the squad with seasoned leadership after previous windows focused heavily on younger talent.

Clearlake’s Growing Influence

If the deal moves forward, Clearlake Capital, led by Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano, will gain near-total control over Chelsea’s operations. A governance clause set to take effect next May would replace Boehly as chairman with a Clearlake appointee.

As Chelsea prepares to face local rivals Fulham in their upcoming Premier League fixture, all eyes are on whether Alonso’s revamped squad can translate boardroom changes into success on the pitch.
