Tottenham's Transfer Dilemma: Key Players on the Move
Tottenham face a pivotal stretch in their summer rebuild, with key names edging towards the exit and transfer targets slipping out of reach as the clock ticks on the window.
Romero nears Atletico switch
Cristian Romero’s future has hung over Spurs all summer. Now it is close to being resolved.
Transfer reporter Matteo Moretto reports that Atletico Madrid are closing in on an agreement with Tottenham for the Argentina defender, with only minor details left between the clubs. Arsenal had been credited with interest earlier in the window, but Atletico have pushed hardest and look set to get their man.
If completed, it would be a major defensive reshuffle for Roberto De Zerbi before a ball has even been kicked in anger.
Spence top of Inter’s list
On the other flank, Djed Spence is moving towards a fresh start in Italy.
Italian outlet Corriere claims the full-back has become Inter Milan boss Cristian Chivu’s top priority to replace Denzel Dumfries, who has joined Real Madrid. Personal terms are said to be agreed, and Spurs and Inter are reportedly close to a deal worth around £25 million.
For a player who never truly settled in north London, Serie A could be the reset he has been waiting for. For Spurs, it is another slot in the squad freed up at a time when every registration spot matters.
Homegrown rules tighten the squeeze
Because that is where the real tension lies for Tottenham right now: the Premier League’s homegrown quota.
Clubs can name up to 25 senior players, with a maximum of 17 non-homegrown. The rest must qualify as homegrown. At present, Spurs are tight against that ceiling.
In practical terms, it means Tottenham can only sign players aged 21 or under without running into trouble, unless they sell more senior names. Any big addition from abroad or a non-homegrown Premier League rival comes with a cost: someone else has to go.
The pressure to move players out is not just financial. It is administrative.
Bergvall weighs up his next step
Lucas Bergvall sits right in the middle of that tension between opportunity and pathway.
The 20-year-old has featured regularly in pre-season under De Zerbi, and there is recognition on the player’s side that the new head coach has backed up his praise with minutes on the pitch. Yet his future remains open.
Earlier in the summer, Bergvall’s camp informed Spurs of his desire for a fresh challenge to aid his development. He had grown frustrated last season at a lack of training time, let alone playing time, as a number eight – the role he views as key to his progression.
Pre-season has softened some of that frustration, but not erased the question. Stay and fight for a role under a coach who clearly rates him, or move to guarantee the position and minutes he craves?
Osimhen door shuts
Up front, one potential marquee solution has slipped away.
Reports earlier this week suggested Spurs had an opening to move for Victor Osimhen. That prospect has quickly faded. Soccernet.ng now report that the Nigerian striker will remain with Galatasaray beyond this summer’s window.
Osimhen is under contract until June 2029, with no release clause, and the Turkish champions are believed to be planning to hand him the No. 9 shirt and build their attack around the 27-year-old.
For Tottenham, who continue to weigh up options at the top end of the pitch, that’s one elite name off the board.
Gakpo only for huge money
Cody Gakpo is another target who looks firmly locked behind a heavy door.
Journalist Pete O’Rourke, speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast for Football Insider, says Liverpool have no plans to sell the Dutch forward despite Tottenham’s interest.
“A lot will depend on what Liverpool do on the incomings during the rest of the transfer window if more signings are to arrive, because [Andoni] Iraola does not want to weaken his squad,” O’Rourke said.
He added that the “only way” Gakpo could move is if Spurs lodged a huge offer of at least £70 million and Liverpool signed more players. With Liverpool’s squad already described as “a bit short”, they “can’t really afford to let Gakpo go” as things stand.
So the message is clear: Tottenham would need to blow Liverpool away financially and hope their recruitment drive accelerates. Right now, neither condition looks close.
City’s Savinho on radar, options thinning
Savinho remains a key target as De Zerbi looks to inject more dynamism into his attack. The Manchester City winger sits high on Tottenham’s wishlist, with Liverpool’s Gakpo and City attacker Omar Marmoush also believed to be of interest.
Targets are there. The challenge is threading them through the eye of the homegrown needle while juggling outgoings that actually raise money and clear space.
Romero, Spence and goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario have all been linked with moves away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Some departures feel inevitable. The question is whether they come in time, and at the right price, to unlock the incomings De Zerbi wants.
Another day in the window, another set of moving parts. For Tottenham, the next few weeks will decide whether this is a tidy reshaping of a squad or a scramble that leaves gaps all over the pitch.
