Tottenham's Transfer Plans: One More Player Expected

Roberto De Zerbi has made it clear: Tottenham’s transfer business is not finished yet.

With the deadline looming on Tuesday at 11pm, Spurs are pushing to add what he calls “one more player” in a “specific position” – and Cody Gakpo sits firmly on their radar.

Tottenham are understood to be keen on the Liverpool forward and are expected to step up their efforts for the Dutchman in the final days of the window, as De Zerbi looks to sharpen his squad for the months ahead.

“I didn't expect a transfer window like we have done,” he admitted on Friday, reflecting on a hectic first summer in charge. “I think we can do one player more in one specific position.”

That clarity has been backed by the club hierarchy. De Zerbi revealed he held a dinner meeting on Thursday night with the owners, sporting director Johan Lange and chief executive Vinai Venkatesham to align on the final stretch of the window.

“Yesterday we went to dinner with the owners, Johan and Vinai and we spoke about this,” he said. “All of us are on the same page and a very good connection.”

The message is simple: expect movement. Spurs are preparing for a busy finish, both in and out, with several players still eyeing the exit before the cut-off.

De Zerbi has already laid down the rules inside the dressing room.

“I've been very clear with all the players: if you speak clearly you can't expect surprises,” he said. “The players who wanted to leave have left. We maybe have some players who want to leave and they are waiting, we are waiting for an offer.

You have to feel proud to stay here. It's an emotional project we are building with new players.”

One of the unresolved cases is Pape Matar Sarr. The midfielder has drawn interest during the window and has not featured in either of Spurs’ first two league games this season, fuelling speculation over his future.

De Zerbi stressed that any absence is not down to fitness.

“Pape is good [fitness-wise],” he confirmed. “We have to see in the last days of the transfer market what can happen with him.”

Tottenham’s plan is clear: one key signing in, a few unsettled players out, and a squad shaped to De Zerbi’s demands by the time the clock hits 11pm on Tuesday. The next four days will show just how far the club are willing to go to match his ambition.
