Trabzonspor Coach Fatih Tekke Resigns After Europa League Exit
Trabzonspor have accepted the resignation of head coach Fatih Tekke, drawing a sudden line under an 18‑month spell that dragged the club back into the spotlight and then ended in a bruising European exit.
Europa League collapse triggers change
Tekke offered to step down after Trabzonspor were dismantled 5-0 on aggregate by Ferencvaros in the Europa League play-off round, a defeat that cut deep for a club that measures itself against continental nights and silverware.
The 48-year-old, who guided Trabzonspor to a third-place finish in the Super Lig last season, initially saw his resignation turned down. Club officials suggested on Friday that his decision had come under the “intense emotional impact” of the Europa League elimination and tried to hold the line.
That stance did not last long.
From resistance to “mutual understanding”
By Wednesday, the mood had shifted. In a carefully worded statement, Trabzonspor confirmed they had reached a “mutual understanding” with Tekke and agreed to part ways “in line with Trabzonspor's interests and long-term objectives”.
The club underlined the scale of his contribution across his roughly year-and-a-half in charge. They credited him with “significant value” on and off the pitch, highlighting both sporting and financial gains, as well as his role in developing the players brought into the squad during his tenure.
Most notably, Tekke delivered a trophy. By winning the Turkish Cup and “bringing the Turkish Cup back to our museum,” as the statement put it, he etched his name once again into the club’s history.
Legacy and a clean break
Trabzonspor stressed that Tekke himself did not want his presence to “harm Trabzonspor in any way” and framed the decision as a necessary reset, a new roadmap that puts the club’s broader interests above any individual.
“We thank our coach for his efforts, his dedicated work, the successes he delivered, and the value he added to Trabzonspor,” the statement concluded.
