Tragic Loss of Young Footballer Ebenezer Anning on N8 Highway
On a stretch of the N8 Highway that usually carries the noise of long-distance traffic and the hum of everyday life, the game stopped for good for a young footballer.
Ebenezer Anning, just 22, lost his life instantly after being struck by a speeding vehicle at Assin Asempanaye, on the Assin Foso–Kumasi road in the Assin North District of Ghana’s Central Region. A police source confirmed to the Ghana News Agency that the impact left him with multiple severe injuries. There was no chance of recovery. No late rescue this time.
The vehicle, a Toyota Voxy with registration number GW 2890–26, was travelling from Obuasi to Mankessim when it hit Anning. The young player, a native of Assin Dansame, had spent the evening in the most ordinary way a footballer can: visiting a friend to watch a match. On his way back home, as he tried to cross the road, routine turned into catastrophe.
The body was first taken to the Assin Praso Presbyterian Hospital, then transferred to the New Edubiase Government Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy. A journey that should have been another walk back from watching football became a final, silent procession.
The driver, identified as Enock Nyarko, did not flee into the night. He later reported himself to the Assin Praso District Police Command, telling officers that Anning suddenly crossed the road from his blindside.
One moment, a young man heading home from a game. The next, a community stripped of a 22-year-old footballer whose story ends not on a pitch, but on a highway.
