Transfer Market Insights: Barcelona, United, and Arsenal Targets

The transfer market rarely sleeps. This summer, it is wide awake and snarling.

From Barcelona’s backline rebuild to Arsenal’s next big swing, from Real Madrid’s lavish defensive plans to Liverpool’s midfield recalculations, Europe’s heavyweights are circling the same pool of talent – and occasionally the same players.

Barcelona eye Van de Ven as Spurs dig in

Barcelona have joined a growing list of clubs tracking Micky van de Ven, with Sky Sports reporting the Catalan side are closely monitoring the Dutchman’s situation at Tottenham.

Van de Ven has two years left on his current deal and has already held talks with Spurs over an extension. Nothing is signed. Nothing is guaranteed.

Tottenham, though, have no intention of being a stepping stone. At 25, Van de Ven is entering his prime, and Roberto De Zerbi has already called him one of the best central defenders in the Premier League. That kind of endorsement only sharpens outside interest – and Spurs’ determination to lock him down.

Greenwood’s price tag looms over Marseille and the Premier League

Across the Channel, Mason Greenwood’s future is again on the table.

L’Equipe report that Arsenal and Tottenham are both interested in the 24-year-old forward, who left Manchester United for Marseille in 2024. The French club, under pressure to sell to meet FFP requirements, may have to listen.

From 1 July, a release clause of around £52m kicks into Greenwood’s contract, despite his valuation being closer to £69m. That gap between clause and perceived worth is exactly the sort of opening Premier League clubs like to exploit.

Calafiori too rich for Real Madrid – for now

Real Madrid’s pursuit of Riccardo Calafiori has hit a wall of numbers.

Andrea Berta’s valuation of the Arsenal defender stands at around £86m after his Premier League-winning season. Los Blancos admire him, but their summer spending tells its own story.

They have already put down £52m on Marc Cucurella and lodged a £78m bid for Ruben Dias. Another £86m on a third defender? Even by Madrid’s standards, that looks excessive. For now, Calafiori appears out of reach.

Luke Shaw set for new United deal on reduced terms

At Old Trafford, Manchester United are planning a different kind of negotiation.

The club are prepared to offer Luke Shaw a new contract, but on a lower salary than his current terms. The 30-year-old full-back, who joined from Southampton in 2014, remains a key figure and has been an asset this season, yet his deal runs out next summer.

His last extension came in 2023. This time, the conversation is about value, longevity and compromise rather than a simple pay rise.

Maguire hails £130m Anderson: “He’s got absolutely everything”

Harry Maguire has put Elliot Anderson in elite company.

The Manchester United defender believes the £130m-rated midfielder can be spoken about alongside Declan Rice, after the pair starred together in England’s World Cup win over Croatia.

United had already pulled out of the race to sign Anderson, citing the enormous financial package required. Maguire’s words underline why the price is so high. He described Anderson as a player who “reminds me of Declan Rice in some aspects in terms of his profile,” praising his ability on the ball, his driving runs and his eye for goal.

Maguire also highlighted Anderson’s versatility, insisting he could play as a 10, 8 or 6. For a club willing to pay the fee, that is a complete midfielder in the making.

Arsenal scan the future with Bartishvili – and keep an eye on Kvaratskhelia

Arsenal’s recruitment department is not just chasing the present.

Georgia Under-21 international Andria Bartishvili has emerged as a target, with BBC Sport claiming the Gunners want to offer the 17-year-old a pre-contract before his current deal expires at the end of the year.

Bartishvili has already drawn comparisons with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, his illustrious countryman and two-time Champions League winner. Arsenal have been linked with Kvaratskhelia himself in the past, but with the winger settled at PSG, Bartishvili looks the more realistic Georgian project for now.

Real Madrid still chasing Enzo as defensive rebuild gathers pace

Real Madrid’s midfield and defence are both under active renovation.

ESPN report that Enzo Fernandez remains a major target, with Madrid’s admiration dating back to his World Cup-winning exploits with Argentina while at Benfica. He is still at the top of their list.

At the back, they have already secured Ibrahima Konaté and Marc Cucurella, yet another central defender is said to be a priority. Calafiori may be too expensive, but the message from the Bernabéu is clear: they are not done strengthening their back line.

Olmo warns Cucurella: Lamine Yamal is waiting in El Clásico

Marc Cucurella’s move from Chelsea to Real Madrid has raised eyebrows in Spain – including in his own national team camp.

Dani Olmo, now a Barcelona player, admitted the switch caused surprise and warned his Spain team-mate that life in La Liga will not be comfortable. Speaking at the World Cup, Olmo joked that Cucurella “kept it inside” and that while he is happy for his friend, he will “have to suffer in the league and so will we.”

Then came the pointed reminder: Lamine Yamal will be waiting for him in El Clásico. Barcelona’s teenage phenomenon will relish that duel.

Liverpool return for Thuram as Juventus look to sell

Liverpool’s midfield reshuffle could yet bring Khephren Thuram back into focus.

Corriere dello Sport claim that the Juventus midfielder is again on the Reds’ list, with the Italian club open to sales to balance their books. Thuram may be available for between £35m and £39m, a figure that will interest several European clubs.

Al-Ahli from the Saudi Pro League have also been linked, but Thuram is understood not to be keen on a move to the Middle East. That stance keeps the door wide open for a Premier League bid.

Spurs join United in race for Nathan de Cat

Tottenham are not just protecting assets; they are stockpiling them.

TeamTalk report that Spurs have entered the race for Anderlecht’s 17-year-old midfielder Nathan de Cat, a player already on Manchester United’s radar. Under Roberto De Zerbi, the north London club are aggressively strengthening the spine of the team.

The work has already started. Andrew Robertson and Marco Senesi have arrived as free agents, while a £52m move for Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke has been wrapped up. De Cat would be another piece of a long-term puzzle.

Everton weigh up Barry interest as Leipzig watch

At Everton, the question is simple: cash in or build around?

Thierno Barry’s first season under David Moyes was mixed at the start, but his confidence grew and he finished with eight goals in 38 Premier League games – respectable numbers for a debut campaign.

That form has not gone unnoticed. The Times report that RB Leipzig are monitoring the striker, although no official bid has been made yet. According to the Liverpool Echo, Everton’s hierarchy would take a view on any serious offer if it lands on their desk.

Arsenal line up Barcola bid after World Cup breakthrough

Arsenal are also plotting a major move at the top end of the pitch.

The Independent report that the club are preparing a huge bid for Bradley Barcola, fresh from his first World Cup goal in France’s 3-1 win over Senegal. The 23-year-old arrives at this summer’s window as a Champions League winner with Paris Saint-Germain and a rising star for Les Bleus.

Arsenal are said to be “checking the necessary details” before submitting a formal offer. If they go all in, Barcola would be another statement attacking signing at the Emirates.

United target Baturina after Como breakout

Manchester United’s search for midfield depth has taken them to Serie A – and to Como.

Sky Sport in Italy report that Croatia midfielder Martin Baturina is under consideration after a standout first season under Cesc Fàbregas. The former Dinamo Zagreb player produced six goals and three assists in 29 league appearances, but the numbers only tell part of the story.

Fàbregas used him everywhere: false nine, left wing, attacking midfield, deeper playmaker. Baturina’s equaliser against England showcased his composure on the big stage, and United have taken note.

One window, a dozen storylines. The money will decide some of them, but ambition – and timing – will decide the rest.
