Tuchel Reflects on Alexander-Arnold's England Recall

Thomas Tuchel has admitted his treatment of Trent Alexander-Arnold during England’s recent past was not entirely fair – but insists the right-back’s route back into the squad will be anything but comfortable.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, the England manager reflected on the decision-making that left Alexander-Arnold watching the World Cup from home. Since Tuchel took charge in October 2024, the Real Madrid defender had featured for just 26 minutes, a late substitute outing against Andorra, before this latest recall.

“Was it always fair? Maybe not from my side,” Tuchel said, lifting the lid on a call that drew heavy scrutiny at the time. “But if you remember, the next camp was September.”

England hit form quickly under Tuchel, and that surge shaped his selections. Once the team started winning, he chose continuity over experimentation, even if it meant a player of Alexander-Arnold’s quality was frozen out.

“We were suddenly flying and we stuck to the same squad in October and that was it for him,” Tuchel admitted. “There was never a chance for him to come back whether that was [fair] or not. I just trusted the guys who were in camp.”

The message was ruthless but clear: momentum mattered more than reputation.

What has changed is Alexander-Arnold’s club form. Under Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid, he has forced his way into the starting XI, making three starts this season and reminding everyone of his range of passing and attacking threat. That surge in Spain has finally translated into another chance with England.

Tuchel, though, is determined to frame this not as a reward, but as an opportunity that must be seized. A call-up, he stressed, is not a ceremonial nod to past achievements.

“You don’t come to relax. You don’t come to take a break,” he said. “You come to perform and it’s difficult to perform for England and the guys who perform now have our trust. And the guys who come new into camp, we demand the highest of them.

“It includes Trent but it’s not exclusively for him. It’s for everyone who comes to our camps.”

The standards are non-negotiable. The timing is brutal.

England step into a serious examination in the UEFA Nations League, starting with world champions Spain on Saturday before a trip to Czechia. There is no soft landing, no gentle reintroduction. If Alexander-Arnold wants a permanent place under Tuchel, he will have to translate his Real Madrid form into the intensity of international football immediately.

Training this week becomes his audition. The World Cup omission still lingers in the background, but Tuchel has opened the door again. Now it is up to Alexander-Arnold to decide whether this recall becomes a turning point or just another brief chapter in a stop-start England career.
