UEFA Appoints Ștefan Kovács for Barcelona vs Atlético Quarter-Final
The stakes are enormous, and so is the man with the whistle.
UEFA has appointed Romanian referee Ștefan Kovács to take charge of the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final between Barcelona and Atlético Madrid at the Camp Nou next Wednesday, a choice that underlines the magnitude of the tie and the trust he commands in Nyon.
At 41, Kovács stands among Europe’s most respected officials, a referee whose rise has mirrored the growing intensity and scrutiny of the modern Champions League. His résumé already carries a line that many of his colleagues will never touch: he took charge of the most recent Champions League final between Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain.
That appointment completed a unique treble. Kovács became the first referee to officiate the finals of all three major European club competitions: the 2022 UEFA Conference League final between Roma and Feyenoord, the 2023–24 UEFA Europa League final between Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen, and then the showpiece Champions League final itself. When UEFA needs a steady hand on its biggest nights, his name is now near the top of the list.
And yet, for Barcelona and Atlético, his presence comes wrapped in a curious statistic.
Kovács has already overseen several matches involving both Spanish clubs, in La Liga and in European competition. Neither Barcelona nor Atlético has managed a single victory in any of those games under his control. The numbers are small, but the pattern is striking enough to fuel pre-match debate and superstition in equal measure.
Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo highlighted another layer to the story: Wednesday’s clash will be Kovács’s seventh assignment in this season’s Champions League. He has already refereed Atlético this campaign in Europe, but this will be his first Champions League appointment involving Barcelona. The Blaugrana will meet him on this particular stage for the first time, with history whispering that wins have been elusive whenever he has been in charge.
Real Madrid know him best among Spain’s giants. Kovács has officiated five of their matches in Spain, a run that has brought them four defeats and one draw this season. Those figures add a sharper edge to his reputation on the Iberian Peninsula: when he appears, Spanish heavyweights have often walked away bruised.
Barcelona now step back into that storyline. This will be the third match Kovács has overseen involving the Catalan club overall, and they are still waiting for a victory with him in the middle. Atlético, too, have yet to break their own winless spell under his watch.
On a night when every decision will be dissected, every whistle contested, UEFA has turned again to one of its most decorated referees. Barcelona and Atlético must now decide whether those stubborn numbers remain an odd quirk of the record books—or become another chapter in a narrative neither side wants to see extended at the Camp Nou.
