UEFA Investigates Mason Greenwood After Fenerbahce vs Lyon Chaos
Mason Greenwood faces a fresh investigation from UEFA after Fenerbahce’s fiery Champions League play-off win over Lyon descended into chaos at full-time.
The Turkish club confirmed that European football’s governing body has opened disciplinary proceedings against Greenwood, team‑mate Matteo Guendouzi and the club itself following the stormy second leg at the Groupama Stadium, which Fenerbahce won 2-1 to reach the main draw.
Tunnel chaos after final whistle
What should have been a night of celebration for Fenerbahce turned ugly once the whistle went. Tensions that had simmered throughout the match boiled over as players and staff from both sides clashed on the pitch and in the tunnel.
Greenwood is being investigated over his involvement in the post‑match confrontation, while Guendouzi stands accused of provoking sections of the Lyon support as he walked off at full-time.
The situation escalated in the tunnel area. Footage showed a figure in what appeared to be a Lyon tracksuit launching what looked like a flying kick in the direction of Guendouzi as tempers flared and both sets of staff tried to drag people away from the flashpoint.
Out on the pitch, the scene was scarcely calmer. Greenwood, the former Manchester United forward, found himself in the middle of the disorder as several Lyon supporters tried to push towards the playing area during Fenerbahce’s celebrations.
The club has now confirmed UEFA has formally stepped in.
Fenerbahce vow to defend players
In a strongly worded statement, Fenerbahce underlined that they will stand behind Greenwood and Guendouzi as the case moves through UEFA’s disciplinary channels.
“Following the UEFA Champions League Play-Off Round second-leg match, a disciplinary process has been initiated by UEFA concerning our players Matteo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood, as well as our Club.
“Our Club will present the necessary defences before the relevant UEFA committees to protect the rights and interests of both our players and Fenerbahce. All required information, documents, and defences will be submitted to UEFA, and developments are being closely monitored by our Club. We present this to the public for information.”
The message was clear: Fenerbahce believe their players have a case and intend to fight it.
Guendouzi: “They insulted my family”
Guendouzi, who has never been shy of confrontation on the pitch, spoke after the game about the abuse he says he received from the stands.
“You know, when you've got 60,000 people insulting your family, your mum, your children – even before the match – and nobody from the refereeing team tells the stadium to be quiet,” he said.
“Because I know that in France, when this sort of thing happens, there comes a point where they'll speak to the supporters and the match might be stopped. For 90 minutes – even longer if you count the warm-up – they were insulting my family.
“That really gets to you. If you want to banter, then it goes both ways. They insulted my mum and my family; to me, that was disrespectful.”
The words cut through the noise of the night. This was not framed as a standard away‑day atmosphere. Guendouzi painted it as something far more personal.
Head coach Ismail Kartal publicly backed his midfielder.
“As a team we all stood together to support Guendouzi. Support was provided. That is what teamwork is all about,” he said, underlining the dressing room’s unity as UEFA’s investigation gathers pace.
Greenwood’s new chapter under scrutiny
For Greenwood, this is an unwelcome subplot at the start of a new chapter. The forward, who left Manchester United and joined Fenerbahce from Marseille on a four‑year deal in July, has helped the Istanbul side back into the Champions League proper for the first time since 2009.
Their reward is a demanding league-phase schedule featuring AS Roma, Aston Villa, Slavia Praha, Liverpool, Shakhtar Donetsk, LASK, Villarreal and Atletico Madrid.
The draw has already stirred intrigue. With United also back in the competition, there remains the possibility of Greenwood facing his former club – but only if both sides first navigate the league phase.
Before any of that, though, UEFA’s disciplinary committees will deliver their verdict on those wild scenes in Lyon.
