Unai Emery Faces Rebuild at Aston Villa After Konsa Departure

Unai Emery is staring at a brutal rebuild at Aston Villa, and the clock is already ticking.

The heart of his defence has just been ripped out. Ezri Konsa, a cornerstone of Villa’s rise and a mainstay at Villa Park with 286 appearances, is on his way to Arsenal. He has reportedly signed a four-year deal with an option for a further year, a move that underlines just how hard the Premier League champions have pushed to strengthen at the back.

Konsa’s leap, Villa’s hole

For Mikel Arteta, this is a statement capture. With ongoing concerns over the fitness of William Saliba and Jurrien Timber, Arsenal needed a defender who can cover multiple roles across the back line. Konsa fits that brief perfectly: experienced, versatile, and battle-hardened in the Premier League.

Arteta has been clear about wanting to “improve and evolve the squad,” and landing Konsa does exactly that. For the player, the pull of joining the reigning champions was simply too strong. For Villa, it leaves a gaping void in a side that had been built to chase Champions League football.

And Konsa is not the only departure. Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, and Lucas Digne have all been moved on. What was once a settled core now looks stripped back, and Emery is scrambling to piece together a new spine.

Tosin at the top of the list

The response from Villa has been swift. According to Sky Sports, their primary target to reinforce the defence is Tosin, the 28-year-old centre-back currently at Chelsea.

On paper, it makes sense. Tosin arrived at Stamford Bridge on a free from Fulham in 2024, bringing with him the pedigree of a Manchester City academy graduate and solid Premier League experience. On the pitch, though, his Chelsea career has never really taken off.

Managerial upheaval in west London has not helped. Tosin has struggled to nail down a regular starting place, and the signs of his slide down the pecking order are now hard to ignore. His squad number has been switched to 38, with the number 4 shirt handed to new signing Valentin Barco. Symbolic or not, it underlines where he stands as Xabi Alonso reshapes the squad for the new campaign.

The clearest indicator came when Tosin was left out entirely from Chelsea’s final pre-season friendly against Real Sociedad. For a player in his prime, that omission felt decisive.

Interest is not lacking. Marseille, Sevilla, and Benfica — managed by his former Fulham boss Marco Silva — have all been linked. Yet the chance to stay in the Premier League, at a club pushing for Europe under a coach like Emery, gives Villa a powerful edge in the chase.

Tomori waits in the wings

Villa, though, are not betting everything on one name. Behind the scenes, another option is being actively explored: Fikayo Tomori.

The AC Milan defender has emerged as a serious alternative if talks for Tosin drag or collapse. Reports suggest Tomori is open to a return to England and is keen on a move to Villa Park, even with other clubs circling. Preliminary discussions are already under way, and the numbers involved will interest Villa’s hierarchy.

Milan are understood to be seeking a fee in the region of €10–15 million. In a market where proven international defenders often command far more, that figure makes Tomori a potentially shrewd, cost-effective solution.

Money spent, decisions looming

The financial balancing act is real. Villa have already invested heavily this summer, bringing in Johan Manzambi, goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, and Joao Gomes. Every new deal now has to be weighed carefully against what has already gone out of the door — and what still needs to come in.

Emery needs a leader at the back. He needs someone who can steady a defence that has just lost its most reliable pillar. Whether that anchor turns out to be Tosin, Tomori, or someone else entirely will shape Villa’s season.

Arsenal have landed their man. The question now is how quickly Villa can find theirs.
