Unai Emery Denies Any Friendship with Chelsea Despite Intense Transfer Activity

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has firmly dismissed claims that his club shares a friendly bond with Chelsea, even after a busy summer transfer window linking the two teams. Emery stressed the fierce rivalry in the Premier League means both sides are determined to outdo each other on and off the pitch.

Transfer Frenzy Between Villa and Chelsea

The exchange of players between Aston Villa and Chelsea has been staggering over recent seasons. This summer, Emiliano Martinez moved to Stamford Bridge for £7.5 million after Morgan Rogers completed a huge £117 million transfer. In return, Villa acquired Nicolas Jackson for a club-record fee up to £65 million, while Alejandro Garnacho joined on loan with a conditional obligation to buy.

The financial figures exchanged highlight the scale of dealings:

• Chelsea to Villa: £163.5 million since 2022
• Villa to Chelsea: £102.5 million, potentially rising to £150.5 million if Garnacho's deal becomes permanent

Such frequent transfers have drawn attention from other Premier League officials, although no rules appear to have been violated.

Emery Insists Rivalry Remains Fierce

Despite the ongoing negotiations, Emery quickly shut down any suggestion of a close relationship. He described the connection as strictly business, emphasizing the competitive nature between the clubs.

"Good relations? The relationship is only through the deals – for money, for other players," Emery said. "They want to kill us. And we want to kill them… it is not a good relationship. Of course, because we have good players and we can as well sign players from them, but it’s not a good relationship, it’s a deal for money and a deal for players."

He also pointed out Chelsea’s recruitment, including key staff like set-piece coach Austin MacPhee, was aimed at weakening Villa.

"They are signing Morgan, they are signing Emiliano Martinez to kill us," Emery added. "I am happy for Emiliano Martinez, I am happy for Morgan Rogers and, of course, I know I am not happy for Chelsea."

Villa Faces Major Changes After Summer Departures

The loss of Martinez and star striker Ollie Watkins, who moved to Al-Hilal, means Aston Villa parted with six regular starters from their Europa League-winning squad last May. Emery acknowledged the challenge of integrating new signings such as Leon Goretzka and Zion Suzuki.

"I know we must rebuild the team," he said. "We will need time. But we must compete on Monday. We needed to compete last Sunday in Brighton but we didn’t compete. We are working every day as fast as possible to be ready, everybody."

Upcoming Test Against Arsenal

Aston Villa face reigning champions Arsenal at home on Monday, hoping to bounce back after a heavy 4-0 defeat against Brighton. Emery might hand debuts to new signings Jackson, Goretzka, and Suzuki as he races to prepare his squad.

The Basque coach praised his former club ahead of the match.

"Arsenal are the favourites," Emery said. "Arsenal, looking at the team with [Mikel] Arteta there seven years in a row, are getting better and better and are investing more and more. They are getting bigger and bigger as a club with the players they can sign. Arteta is doing a fantastic job. Arsenal are the favourites to win the Premier League and to win the Champions League. I like watching them a lot."
