United's 25-Man Premier League Squad for 2026-27: Notable Omissions Explained
The transfer window is shut, the paperwork is done, and United have locked in their 25-man squad for the 2026-27 Premier League season.
League rules keep clubs on a tight leash: no more than 25 senior players, and only 17 of those can fall outside the ‘homegrown’ category. To count as homegrown, a player must have been registered with a club in England or Wales for three full seasons before turning 21.
United have hit the numbers cleanly. Eight homegrown players are in Michael Carrick’s senior group, a core that includes Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Mason Mount. Around them sit 15 players who do not meet the homegrown criteria, completing the 25-man list.
Then came the detail that made supporters double-take. One of last season’s breakout names was missing.
Mainoo did not appear on the official senior squad submission.
Given his recent journey, that absence stood out. The midfielder spent the first half of last season on the fringes under Ruben Amorim, pushed to the edge of the picture just as his career seemed ready to explode. Carrick’s arrival changed that. Mainoo was dragged back into the spotlight, trusted, and given a prominent role as United reshaped under new management.
So why isn’t he on the list?
Because he doesn’t need to be.
Born after the start of 2005, Mainoo qualifies as an Under-21 player this season. Premier League regulations mean players in that age bracket are automatically eligible to play and do not have to be registered in the 25-man senior squad. His omission is a technicality, not a demotion.
The same rule covers Leny Yoro. The defender turns 21 in November, so he also sits outside the official 25 without losing any right to feature in the league. Both can be picked at any time.
Behind them, a deep pool of youth talent waits on the U-21 list, each with a different route – and timescale – towards the first team. Ayden Heaven, Tyler Fletcher, Shea Lacey, Harry Amass and summer signing Tynan Thompson all qualify as Under-21 and are available for selection whenever Carrick decides to roll the dice.
Supporters will keep a close eye on Paraguayan left-back Diego Leon, tipped internally as one who could soon make the jump. Recent arrival Cristian Orozco carries a similar buzz, another highly rated prospect whose name is already circulating among academy watchers.
There is also a more familiar surname in the youth ranks. Kai Rooney, son of Old Trafford legend Wayne Rooney, is listed as an Under-21 player for the first time after stepping up as a first-year scholar over the summer. He is joined in that apprenticeship intake by Jacey Carrick, Michael Carrick’s own son, adding a personal twist to the club’s next generation.
The senior squad is set. The door for the kids is wide open. Now it’s down to Carrick to decide how quickly he wants the future to arrive.
