Victor Ozhianvuna: The €2m Talent Ready for Ireland
Heimir Hallgrimsson learned about one of the brightest young prospects available to him the modern way – by turning on the media and hearing another manager bang the drum.
Victor Ozhianvuna, the 17-year-old Shamrock Rovers forward already bound for Arsenal in a €2m deal, has suddenly moved from long-term prospect to live option for the Republic of Ireland senior squad. And it all kicked off after Stephen Bradley’s impassioned plea following Rovers’ 4-1 win over Drogheda United.
A €2m talent and a public push
Ozhianvuna lit up that game for the Hoops, underlining why Arsenal have already secured his signature and why Rovers stand to profit further with add-ons and a 20% sell-on clause. His transfer, confirmed last October, set a new League of Ireland record, eclipsing the €1.7m that took Mason Melia from St Patrick’s Athletic to Tottenham Hotspur.
Bradley didn’t hold back afterwards. He openly urged Ireland to bring the teenager into the senior setup now, even though the Grenada friendly on 16 May in Murcia falls outside the regular international window and just a day after a full League of Ireland schedule.
"There’s no one that can tell me that kid shouldn’t be in the Ireland squad," Bradley said, adding that he would willingly let Ozhianvuna miss a league game against Dundalk if it meant a call-up. His argument was clear: get him in early, get him used to the environment, and let his talent speak for itself.
"I promise you get him in that camp and in 10 minutes he’ll show what he is about," Bradley insisted.
Hallgrimsson listens – and pushes back
Hallgrimsson named his initial squad for the training camp and Grenada friendly with a bold stroke: nine uncapped players included, but no current League of Ireland players. With the domestic season in full flow, he had decided not to disrupt clubs for a non-window fixture.
So Bradley’s comments landed with some force.
"We've been watching him, of course," Hallgrimsson told RTÉ Sport, confirming that Ozhianvuna was already on the radar even if he has yet to break into the Under-21s. "He hasn't made our Under-21s yet and I surely expect him to be there soon."
The Icelandic coach made one thing crystal clear, though. He picks the squad, not the Shamrock Rovers manager.
"It is not Stephen who is picking the squad, it's me," he said, a pointed reminder amid the noise surrounding the teenager.
Hallgrimsson explained that the decision to leave out League of Ireland players for the Grenada game was deliberate, a nod to the calendar and to the volume of new faces already coming in. With so many debutants and several established internationals involved, he wants to keep some flexibility for the official FIFA window.
"We didn't plan to have players in season for this camp, but with bringing in so many new faces and also experienced players from our squad, we open spot for the May/June window as well," he said.
A door opens for Qatar and Canada
That May/June window is where things get interesting for Ozhianvuna. Ireland face Qatar at the Aviva Stadium on 28 May and then Canada in Montreal on 6 June, with a fresh squad to be named after the Grenada match.
Hallgrimsson has deliberately left room to manoeuvre.
"We only announced 21 players today and we have a place for adding one or two players in the squad," he said. "I think he is one of the players who has a really high potential. Whether he is ready for national first-team, we wait and see."
The manager admitted that Bradley’s public comments effectively pushed Ozhianvuna into the immediate conversation.
"He wasn't in the frame until I heard this last night," Hallgrimsson said. "We didn't plan to take players from the League of Ireland for this camp."
Yet the teenager’s rise is becoming hard to ignore. Arsenal on the horizon. Record fee. Standout domestic performances. And now the national manager openly describing him as "a good name in the mix."
"Victor is just a good player, even though he is young, he is just a good player," Hallgrimsson said. "If he is ready for the first-team, we will have to wait and see. But he is a good name in the mix. If he is available, we might pick him."
For Ireland, the equation is straightforward and tantalising. A €2m forward, still 17, already drawing strong endorsements at club level and now sitting on the edge of the senior squad. The question is no longer whether Victor Ozhianvuna will wear green – it’s how soon Hallgrimsson is willing to throw him in.
