Vinicius Junior's Contract Renewal and Arsenal's Interest in Alvarez
Vinicius Junior was never really coming. Not to Arsenal, not to the Premier League, not this summer.
As the Brazilian star edged into the final 12 months of his previous Real Madrid deal, the noise around him grew. Europe’s elite were mentioned. Saudi Arabia’s money was mentioned. Arsenal’s left flank was mentioned. But behind the headlines, one former Premier League stalwart saw something else entirely.
Gareth Barry, speaking to GOAL via BetVictor Online Casino, called it for what he believes it was: leverage.
“I was buzzing to see Vinicius Junior linked with the Premier League. It would have been great to see him over here,” he said, before cutting to the chase. “From afar, it seemed like a classic agent's tactic, if they were in negotiations, bringing in another massive club would obviously pique interest and help get that contract spiced up to meet demands before signing. It was classic agent play, personally.”
The “classic play” worked. Vinicius has now signed a new contract at the Santiago Bernabeu running through to 2032, ending any realistic prospect of a move. Real Madrid keep a player who has been a recent Ballon d’Or contender and a consistent match-winner. Arsenal, who had been loosely floated as a possible destination, are left to look elsewhere.
Arsenal’s left side and the one that got away
On paper, the fit looked tempting. Arsenal have parted company with Leandro Trossard this summer and are preparing to cash in on Gabriel Martinelli. Mikel Arteta’s left side is being rebuilt on the fly.
Christos Tzolis has settled quickly after his arrival in north London, the former Norwich man wasting little time in finding his feet. He offers energy, direct running, and a willingness to work. But Vinicius would have been something else entirely – a statement signing, a marquee name to light up the Emirates and reshape the Gunners’ attack.
Barry admitted the Premier League has missed out on one of the game’s true box-office talents. “At the same time, it would have been great to see him in the Premier League, as he's one of the world's stars at the moment,” he said.
Instead, Vinicius stays in white. Arsenal move on.
Alvarez the next La Liga target
The story doesn’t end in Madrid, though. While Vinicius closes the door, another La Liga forward has Arsenal’s name swirling around him.
Julian Alvarez, a World Cup winner with Argentina and already well-versed in the demands of English football after his spell at Manchester City, is looking for a way out of Atletico Madrid. The 26-year-old’s situation has alerted several clubs, and Arsenal are again being mentioned in the conversation.
Barry, who saw James Milner overtake his all-time Premier League appearance record last season, understands why Atletico are reluctant to let Alvarez go.
“I was surprised to see that Julian Alvarez wants to leave Atletico, but I understand why they'll keep him. He's a great player, his work rate's incredible,” he said. “He'd be a great team-mate, I'm sure, to play alongside.”
The links to Arsenal, though, left him unconvinced.
“I was surprised by the links with Arsenal. I think it's probably similar to what they've already got. I'm not sure they would have needed him, but there would definitely be interest from other Premier League clubs. But yeah, I think if [Diego] Simeone is that strong on keeping him, I'm sure he'll stay for another year at least.”
Barcelona lurking, Arsenal watching
Alvarez’s name is not only being whispered in north London. Barcelona, short of central striking options and searching for a reliable No. 9, have also been tracking the Argentine. Their problem is familiar and financial: the Catalan club’s transfer funds are again tight, which complicates any serious move.
That financial strain could, in theory, crack the door open for Arsenal or another Premier League side. Alvarez offers versatility across the front line, relentless pressing, and the kind of big-game experience that usually comes at a premium.
For now, though, Atletico and Simeone hold the cards.
Clock ticking on Arsenal’s window
Arsenal have already started their title defence with authority, opening the 2026-27 Premier League campaign with a comfortable win over Coventry. The foundations are there. The squad is strong. But the market rarely sleeps, and the Gunners still have until September 1 to decide whether to push for one more major attacking piece.
Vinicius Junior will not be that player. His future is locked in at Real Madrid until 2032, the Premier League reduced to the role of bargaining chip in a negotiation that ended exactly where most expected.
Alvarez, though? His future is less settled. The rumours will not go away. With Barcelona short of cash, Atletico keen to hold on, and Premier League clubs circling, Arsenal must decide whether he’s truly what they need – or just another name in a window full of noise.
