Virgil van Dijk's Stance on Cody Gakpo's Future at Liverpool
Virgil van Dijk has drawn a clear line in the sand over Cody Gakpo’s future – and it does not point towards Manchester.
With Manchester City pushing to land the Dutch forward before the transfer window shuts, Liverpool’s captain made it plain he has no interest in seeing his compatriot swap Anfield for the Etihad.
City are in active negotiations over Gakpo, who is valued at around £80 million, with The Athletic reporting that the Premier League champions have become his preferred destination after Tottenham Hotspur also made their move. The saga is gathering pace. Liverpool’s stance is not.
Despite Bradley Barcola undergoing a medical ahead of his switch from Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool will not sanction Gakpo’s departure in the next 48 hours unless they secure another winger first. No replacement, no deal.
Asked directly after Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham if he wanted Gakpo to stay, Van Dijk barely needed the question.
“What do you think? He’s a top-class player. I think we should keep our quality players,” he told reporters, underlining both the importance of Gakpo and the tension of these final days of the window.
Van Dijk then went beyond the usual captain’s script. This is not just about tactics and depth charts for him.
“We’ll see what the next few days bring. I want him to stay not just because he’s a top-class player, but also because he’s a friend of mine. He’s very important to us.”
That blend of personal loyalty and professional calculation runs through the dressing room right now. Liverpool know they are in a delicate phase, rebuilding and reshaping under the pressure of expectation and the financial muscle of rivals like City.
Amid that, Barcola’s imminent arrival has given Van Dijk a jolt of optimism. The France international, arriving from PSG, is another statement that Liverpool still carry heavyweight pull.
“He’s a good player, and he has pace,” Van Dijk said. “I remember a goal he scored against Chelsea in the Champions League last season. If he comes here, he’ll be welcomed with open arms.”

“I don’t think there’s any doubt that a club like Liverpool is a very attractive destination for very good players. This is one of the biggest clubs in the world. We all know we’re going through something of a transitional phase. Either you want to be part of it or you don’t.”
