Will England Dismiss Thomas Tuchel After World Cup Semifinal Loss to Argentina?

England came heartbreakingly close to reaching their first World Cup final since 1966, only to lose a 1-0 lead against Argentina in the semifinal. The defeat, sealed by two Lionel Messi assists late in the game, left fans questioning whether manager Thomas Tuchel is the reason behind the loss.

Despite high hopes for a trophy, the Three Lions fell short, and many believe tactical choices played a significant role. Calls for Tuchel’s dismissal have grown louder in the aftermath of the 2-1 loss.

Is Tuchel’s Job at Risk?

So far, there has been no official indication from England's Football Association that Tuchel will be sacked following the semifinal setback. Fans remain disappointed with his approach during his debut World Cup campaign as England's head coach.

After the match, Tuchel admitted mistakes to the BBC, explaining, "We got too passive after we scored and conceded a lot of chances. We could not turn ball possession around and conceded so many crosses and shots. We couldn’t keep the level up after we scored." He added that changes were made after the goal but insisted it was not a structural issue.

"It’s easy to say my decisions were wrong after the defeat," Tuchel said.

According to Mike Keegan from Daily Mail Sports, Tuchel still enjoys full support from FA chief executive Mark Bullingham and is expected to remain England’s manager through the 2028 European Championship.

England’s Performance Under Scrutiny

England entered the tournament with mixed performances. They started strong with a 4-2 win over Croatia but followed with a goalless draw against Ghana. A 2-0 victory against Panama secured progression, but the team only scored their first goal late in that match.

The knockout rounds were challenging. England trailed first-time World Cup participants DR Congo for nearly seventy minutes before eventually pulling through. Their quarterfinal against Norway saw them briefly behind until two goals by Jude Bellingham turned the tide.

Against Argentina, Tuchel waited until the 72nd minute to make defensive substitutions. Once Enzo Fernandez scored to equalize, England shifted to a five-defender formation—a move fans debated as either too soon or too late, but widely seen as ineffective.

Tuchel said on Fox Sports, "We conceded [a chance] straight away and we decided to go to a back five because the gaps were far too open." He explained that offensive changes were also made in recent games to support the players.
